THE spirit of the UN Security Council lies in achieving consensus among the veto-states. It is empowered when the five permanent members of the Council agree on an issue.

This gracious spectacle of unity among the mostly divided group on a number of issues was seen at the recent meeting of the Council. The imposition of adverse economic sanctions on North Korea is worth mentioning here. The embargo is unanimously passed by the UN Security Council.

Moreover, it is a sign of sensibility by world powers that in less than a year the permanent members had a consensus on controversial matters. Earlier, in the resolution against Israel’s illegal settlement in Palestine, the US had avoided vetoing. Thus, such developments in the resolution of conflict are a good omen for peace in the world. In cases where humanity is at the brink of devastation, the influencial powers should not be at daggers drawn against one another for their vested interests.

All the existing conflicts in the world must be settled amicably by the global body for the sake of better future of the people at large.
