LAHORE: A student of the Punjab University was found dead on Wednesday morning at old campus hostel.

Manzoor Hussain (24), a resident of of Pakpattan, was enrolled to the MA Urdu literature programme.

According to initial police inquiries, the body was approximately three days old. As he was staying in the room of his friend who was on some holidays, no one came to know about the incident.

However, police suspected it a suicide case on the basis of some circumstantial evidences and the story the family shared with the investigators.

They said the homicide investigation officials were inquiring into the case to determine the reason for his death.

Sharing details of the incident, City Division SP Adil Memon told Dawn that Manzoor had been staying at Room No 168 of Khalid Bin Waleed Hostel for the last some months.

He was sharing the room of his friend “without seeking prior permission” from the university administration, Memon said.

The SP said some students noticed stench and informed the [university] administration.

He said Manzoor’s sister was also studying at the university. According to the family’s version, he said, Manzoor was depressed as his family had refused to accept the girl he wanted to marry.

Mr Memon said it appeared the student had swallowed some poison.

Police have recovered from the room some belongings of the deceased, including his mobile phone and documents.

The SP said police were awaiting autopsy report.

To a question, he said, the family refused to lodge a criminal case. However, police would make a decision after the autopsy report, the SP said.

Shot Dead: A man was allegedly shot dead by his neighbour after a quarrel in the Shafiqabad area on Wednesday.

According to police, Naeem and suspect Tony exchanged words on a Mohallah Marzipura street where Naeem asked him not to drive motorcycle fast in the street.

Tony fled the scene after shooting at and injuring Naeem, who later died at a local hospital.

The Shafiqabad police registered a case.
