THIS refers to the news item “Sharif seeks support of ‘people’s court’” (Aug 10). An ex-prime minister asks people that if he has done no wrong, why the Supreme Court has removed him from office.

This is in complete contradiction to what he said earlier – that he would accept the apex court’s ruling. But now in a turnaround he goes to the people to vote him back to power and prove the Supreme Court wrong and force it to reverse its judgement.

If that were so, then judges would not be judges; they would have been saleable items available to the highest bidder.

The judgement is based on facts presented in the court and according to the law. They are, as the proverbial saying goes, blind to public opinion.

Public opinion is based on emotions whereas the law books are based on facts.

In a country where 75pc of voters are illiterate, asking them to vote you back to power is to make a joke of the electoral system. The people are not aware of the intricacies of the law. Going to the people’s court means we should let the uneducated crowd decide whom they should have as their prime minister.

This is cheating the people. The turnout in elections has never been more than 35pc, meaning that public does not believe in the fairness of the electoral system and those in parliament represent only 35pc of the population.

So their claim that they have the people’s mandate is false. They should be reminded that they represent only a fraction of the population.

So Mr Nawaz Sharif, the people who are educated enough know their rights. Don’t try to fool them about going to the people’s court.

HIS brother is the chief minister, a party man the new prime minister and his wife prime minister-in-waiting, then what on earth has motivated Nawaz Sharif to play victim of democracy?

It is not democracy, but plutocracy entrenched in dynastic politics. One of the vehicles of egoistic deposed prime minister’s cavalcade reportedly hit a 12-year-old boy and other vehicles of caravan of ‘democracy’. Even medical emergency vehicles did not hesitate to stop and take the boy to a hospital and continued to crush him.

The caravan of democracy ensued to create “first martyr of democracy” as Sharif called the crushed boy and his spokesman regurgitated the same.

The PML-N’s brand of democracy only needs the sweat and blood of the poor to flourish, while they are destined to enjoy the luxuries of the so-called democracy. The cruelty and callousness of the PML-N leadership is unprecedented.

Had such an incident occurred with the Sharif family they would have postponed their political activities and announced mourning for weeks.
