QUETTA: A landslide killed four workers inside a coalmine in the Sur range area, some 50km east of here, on Wednesday.

According to official sources, 19 workers went into a mine in the morning in the Sur range coalmine area where a portion of the mine caved in when they began their work.

Four men, working approximately 3,000 feet deep in the mine, were buried beneath the landslide.

Rescue workers rushed to the mine and after hectic efforts, bodies of the victims were recovered.

“The tragic incident took place due to sudden landslide inside in the mine,” Bakhat Nawab, president of the Coalmine Owners Association, said.

The workers who survived the incident were rescued from the mine.

The victims have been identified as Kashmir Khan, Haji Abdul Qayyum, Muhammad Irfan and Ali-Ur-Rehman.

They belonged to Shangla in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and their bodies were dispatched to their native villages.

The chief inspector of mines reached the site and ordered a probe into the incident. The mine was shut down.
