A 23-year-old student of Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan was killed and another seriously injured by a vigilante mob for allegedly "publishing blasphemous content online", local police said Thursday.
The incident occurred within the university premises. The campus was shut down following the incident until further notice and its hostels vacated to avoid a further escalation of violence.
At least 45 people had been arrested in connection with the incident by Thursday evening, according to Mardan District Police Officer Dr Mian Saeed.
No case had been filed against the two students prior to the incident and police had not been investigating the two on blasphemy charges.
The mob instead seems to have been incited by rumours circulating among the university's student body.
Mardan's Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Mohammad Alam Shinwari said the deceased student, Mashal, had been accused of running Facebook pages "which allegedly published blasphemous content".
He was attacked by a large group of students and appears to have succumbed to a gunshot wound, the DIG said.
“The charged students then wanted to burn his body,” Shinwari said, before police intervened.
'Beaten and bloody': eyewitnesses recount horror
An eyewitness at the scene of the incident said Mashal and Abdullah, two Mass Communication students, were attacked because they were believed to be "promoting the Ahmadi faith on Facebook".

The eyewitness said a mob of university students first surrounded Abdullah and forced him to recite verses from the Holy Quran. Although he repeatedly denied the accusation that he was an Ahmadi, the students beat him nonetheless.
The police, when alerted, reached the site of the attack and rescued Abdullah, after which the mob set its sights on Mashal, who was in the hostel at the time, the eyewitness said.
Mashal was beaten and shot by the mob and succumbed to the injuries he received.
Video footage of the incident showed Mashal lying on the floor surrounded by men. The student was not moving and his body bore marks of severe torture. Men could be seen kicking his lifeless body and beating it with wooden planks.
Towards the end of the video, he was pulled from his clothes by an unidentified man.

A student requesting anonymity said several leaders of the university's student bodies were part of the attacking mob.
One of Mashal's teachers later told Reuters that he was a passionate and critical student.
“He was brilliant and inquisitive, always complaining about the political system of the country, but I never heard him saying anything controversial against the religion,” the teacher said.
'Police unable to control the situation'
University administration official Fayaz Ali Shah confirmed that the mob of students had killed Mashal over allegations of 'blasphemy'.
He said over 20 officers had arrived at the scene, but were unable to control the situation because there were so many students involved.
Hostel warden Muhammad Ali, recounting the incident, claimed that: "Three to four thousand students were approaching. I was alerted that they were approaching, so I closed the gates but they broke in, found Mashal and fired at him and started beating him."
Students said police had been alerted of the incident and were present on campus at the time. When asked why they didn't intervene, police said there were "too many people" in the mob for them to take on.

Sad! it is duty of scholars to preach against taking law in own hands
Sad and very sad
we have become adjudicators and executioners.
Intolerance at its peak.
Pakistan is a country where every one think that they have born right to judge some one else faith. The culprits should be arrested and get the severe punishments.
Religious intolerance is a cancer for this country. No use of Rad ul fasaad untill and unless, we are not taking action against intolerance in each and every form.
We need only one just punishment and the nation of cowards we are, everyone would be on path of straight and narrow. Justice should be swift and be seen.
A true muslim believes in the rule of law not personal whims or mob mentality by taking law into own hands...
Unbelievable a genuine student would do such heinous activity on his own openly visible social media. Must find and take to the task, the real perpetrators.
I had lived in Pakistan in the 1960s. I think Pakistan was a much more tolerant society in those days than now.
Intolerance follows lack of logic. Why can't these folks be open to discussion or answering legitimate questions?
One can only hope that the guilty of this heinous crime will be meted out with exemplary punishment to deter this barbaric practice of killings under the guise of blasphemy. How many more have to die over ignorance.
We Pakistanis have a bad thing of taking matters in our own hands. Very sad to hear this.
Blasphemous contrent should never be allowed and strong "Legal" action should be taken against its publishers. But on other hand, public should report such issues to law enforcement agencies and not take law in their own hand.
Full details of the incident is not available it is too early to judge.
@IMTIAZ ALI KHAN well said man
@IMTIAZ ALI KHAN : Too much of ANYTHING is BAD!
Students or no one should never be allowed to take law into their own hands. Justice should be given to the victim.
@Abdullah Haroon Pasha Same is the case with India. The older generation is much tolerant, peace loving and humble people. This may be the trend across the globe.
@IMTIAZ ALI KHAN always sane thoughts with logic.... we need more of your kind...
@Ahmed bin Babar This is not what situation on the ground sir
Why not, as soon as such incidents occur, religious scholars of different schools of thought come over the TV and social media and condemn this attitude of killing and speak out the correct narrative regarding blasphemy. Perhaps they themselves are afraid of this killing mind set.
and where is the KPK ideal police during the incident?
i tell you pakistan is going in very wrong direction. it this continue, pakistan may have a big crises
Failure of parents and teachers, especially religious is what it is. And the government for not doing anything about it and failure to ensure no one is above the law.
It is getting worse by the day. No one cares about the law and everyone becomes the judge, jury and executioner. Why did those - who "thought" that the student was publishing objectionable contents on the face book - not report it to the university management or to the police and decided to handle it by themselves? There is a dire need that kids need to be taught at the start of their schooling age the fundamentals of being a good and tolerant human. Very sad.
If law will not be enforced to stop blasphamy then unfortunately common people will make an execuse to become the law.
They consider themselves God by punishing and killing someone and anyone they think is not as per their norms.
where is PTI's outstanding police force?
@haider - "If law will not be enforced to stop blasphamy then unfortunately common people will make an execuse to become the law."
This is exactly what is wrong with the society. Unless a crime is reported to the concerned authorities, how to do expect it to be addressed? And while some will argue that the authorities are incompetent and corrupt, which is mostly true, it still does not give anyone the right to start killing people based on their own judgement.
Let there be love and peace around the world.
@sultan - "where is PTI's outstanding police force?"
How would you expect the KP police to address an issue if they don't even know about it? You criticism (sarcasm, actually) would have been justified if someone had reported it to the KP police prior to the incident and the police did not take any action.
The culprits should be Punished
@OM Shanti(god is peace) I like your ID Shanti, shanti and shantihi :)
R.I.P innocent soul sorry my heart cries for his family so sad.
Sick and tired of hearing such violence especially on campuses. Glad arrests were made!
@IMTIAZ ALI KHAN Thank you
This is really sad and an unacceptable act by learned and educated people.
@sultan How many police officer does KPK police has. I do not know which planet you live on or what are you smoking when you make these sort of comments.
And these are out best and the brightest, studying at a University!?
Tells me more about the quality of the Institution, the teachers and the background of this ignorant and intolerant lot.
disgusting behaviour, should be punished .
And they are so called educated youth of this country. We were crying for beef ban last week.
Please shut down all educational institutions! No benefit in going to institutes which produce murderers, intolerance and animals.
The Master Mind who instigated the mob behind this attack needs to be punished.
This is not only sad it shameful .
@IMTIAZ ALI KHAN It is not the law alone, it is the mindset of the people.
So the darkness of ignorance has overpowered the light of education. We have failed to transform our students into nice being beings. How brutal. How insane.
PML N govt is directly responsible for not controlling things in time.
Somehow I have now more respect for that bare-foot, illiterate, poorly dressed, sweaty but humble and hardworking day-laborer or street sweeper, than these 'so-called University un-enlightened student'from elite families.
Please ask the University for a refund. You are wasting your parent's money.
Educational Universities should teach the moral values of love, peace, tolerance, co-existence, pluralism, liberalism, forgiveness and compassion.
Universities are supposed to places for free thinking, high quality education, research, exchange of ideas. If this is the state of university where thousands or students are obsessed about religion, I fear the future of Pakistan.
The perpetrators of this crime must be caught and brought to justice.
Terribly sad incident. Very strong punishment is required to set an example. If possible the whole univ students/batch of students should be expelled (i know such punishment has been awarded)
I used to be a lecturer there. It was a relatively better place back then as compared to the rest of the newly established universities in KP. Religious and political parties started to flourish now I suppose and that seems to be a big problem. It does not change the fact though that a large number of people in Pakistan are intolerant towards minorities in general and Qadianis in particular. Going through the comments on the university FB page I came across just one person who condemned this brutal act. All the other people on the page were either indifferent to it or supported the murderers. If this is the future generation of Pakistan than the future of our country is kind of bleak (to say the least).
Pakistan moves further back into the dark ages, and it is students, not illiterates, doing the lynching
Judge, Jury and Executioners - all in one, before the poor guy was even investigated, much less charged by the police, presented before a court of law with indisputable evidence against him?
What a sad society this is. They will never reach the 21st century, with 18th century mindset.
@IMTIAZ ALI KHAN Stay safe buddy.
@haider who made them to judge other?
A test time for PTI led govt and its police in the province
Very sad incident and a very confusing situation for any muslim. On one hand everybody condemns this kind of vigilante justice and on the other hand day and night our religious leaders and scholars, from top to bottom, preach and teach that the punishment for blasphemy is death. To deal with these kind of volatile situations, the state should have very clear cut laws for average citizens not to take law into their own hands and let the proper authorities deal with it.
@IMTIAZ ALI KHAN Well said.
Human-being is one who understand the sufferings of other beings. Think about the person you killing has a family like yours.
Condolences to the families of the murdered and injured student. Failure of the state on many level over 30 years has led to this heinous crime. Anyone arrested for this inhumane act will become a hero like Qadri. A vicious cycle.
@Sharique - Munich he denied the accusations and was killed in spite of this.
What a sad moment for the entire nation? Such behavior is sick beyond words!
@Falcon1
Wow
Well said!
Problem is deep rooted the way people are raised in different part of Pakistan. Very saddened to see all this.
This is alarming how extremism spearheaded by religious political parties has crept into our educational institutions and in society.
As I have been saying ll along do not use the religion card, it is very dangerous because once this Gennie is out of the box it is impossible to put it back in. Religion is between a man and his God and government should refrain from using it for any purposes. The gains from using the religion card is limited because it can very quick backfire and come back to haunt you as nobody is perfect.
Now I think the PM and Interior minister will realize what happens when you continuously stoke religion into politics. As the fires of this stupidity spread, Pak is moving closer and closer to an abyss. All the secular political parties and the armed forces should come together and tackle this menace head on. It is the need of the hour because the future of Pak is at stake.
What I meant to say is make the law supreme and bring everyone under the purview of the law. Leave no stone unturned in punishing anyone who breaks the law. There are two way forward for Pak, I will suggest to choose wisely.
Yet another example of a senseless, lifeless, mindless society – a society which takes pride in shameful acts but is shameless and immune to things that are really disgraceful – honour killing, corruption, bribery, women/human rights,…an endless list. We all condemn these acts but what we really do to stop/educate/help these situation. My head is hung in shame and my eyes are filled with tears – I am really saying this very heavy heart and having very good knowledge of Islam.
no one should be allowed to take law into their own hands. Let law inforcement and judicial system fiction. If system does not work make changes in civilized manner. Above all educate people to everyone's right.
From among this demented lot, out future leaders will rise.
Now you know, why you are stuck with the likes of NS and Zardari et al! Because we could not tolerate Musharraf, BB or ZAB, before them...
@AXH Thank you AXH Haider's comment is exactly the mentality behind such attacks
@IMTIAZ ALI KHAN ...You should go in person to this University and preach to them..
How tragic and how incredibly sad? Wake up Pakistan !
Where are condemnations from Imran Khan, Shireen Mazari, & the PTI leadership?
This is the teaching being imparted in our universities
Hate, intolerance and violence, a test case for the National Action Plan. Let's see if the government's actions matches its words.
can anyone tell me what's the difference between Narendera Modi India and today Pakistan in India extremist Hindu lynch for allegedly eating beef and in Pakistan people take law into their hands for alleged blaspheme although it is state right only to punish people on such offence if proven guilty.
PTI.J.I. and ANP students were involved
When our scholars are extremists and feel the right to take life of different faith then a society of mad people evolves and result is this.
@usman No difference at all. Garbage in garbage out!!!!
Shameful act by people who take law in their hands....Sad.
Barbaric act.
Not humans, we are talking about beasts here.
Condolences to the families of those killed.
This is what happens when individuals invited by someone, themselves become judge jury and executioner. Pathetic mob mentality claiming another life. This needs to condemned and curbed in the strongest possible manner by the authorities. Very sad. The culprits, both the attackers and the inciters should be arrested and given exemplary punishment.
Very very sad - irony is that this is coming not from general public but so called educated class - the so called future of Pakistan. This highlight so many weaknesses in our system: 1. Intolerance - there shouldn't be any place for this in a civilized society. There are always legal ways to pursue any controversial issues. 2. Police - excuse given by police is just unacceptable. In this time and age, one can always call for back up quickly. They should have tried to stall the crowds till the arrival of more help. 3. I heard so many good things about frontier police. this is definitely one aspect they should look into to make sure that such incidents never happen again. 4. Law should be enforced with full force and all culprits should be punished. It should be made an example for the people so that next time they think before acting in such a barbaric way. All responsible students should be tried in an expedited way.
When the state and its institutions fail to punish the culprits of blasphemy, the mob take things into their own hands. Sad state of affairs.
Are these students? They fit the bill of hooligans,
Speechless... Very sad indeed!
Oh No no no.... Unbelievable.. I we are moving forward but looks with one step forth we go five steps back
"When asked why they didn't intervene, the police said there were too many people in the mob for them to take on."
Goes to show that Police also do not care about minorities.
The student body leaders should be arrested and prosecuted. The police were outnumbered by the mob and this no reason not to take any action. The police will always be outnumbered but they have the weapons. They should have asked for immediate reinforcements .Because of their incompetence and cowardness , one student is dead. Street justice should have no place in our country especially in the learning institutions.
Condemnable in the highest words. But condemnation should not be enough. The culprits must, I repeat must be punished to make it exemplary, if we need to retrieve any kind of tolerance in our society. Where are the preachers who were targeting Indian nationalists? Will they condemn this action?
And we say we are a progressive socity
Speechless.What a shame!
@Sharique - Munich Why blasphemous content should not be tolerated? It is this very intolerance that breeds into extremism of all sorts leading to violent behavior culminating into most brutal kind of terrorism the whole world today is victim of. Why not teach and practice tolerance of all ideas, thoughts and expression of every religion or no religion which would ultimately bring about a tolerant, peaceful society like of which we have in the western world.
We can be sure that the two students did not post anything blasphemous online. They were killed, because most likely someone started the rumour. The posts must be published to ascertain the facts.
Another example of how Pakistani society has reached the highest level of intolerance. Where it is going?.
punish all culprits
Respect the religion and live with peace
The question is will the State head of Mardan will be blamed for the incident, will he be held responsible for not controlling the Mob or making police act to stop to voilence? In India, Gujrat thats how we do it. We hold the CM responsible for the communal violence until he is proven not-guilty.
This is barbaric. What image Pakistan portrays to the world. One step forward 10 steps back Law must be changed and come in force.
This is an excellent opportunity for Imran Khan to make sure that justice be provided to the victims' families. Teach these misguided individuals a life time lesson so that no one be able to take anyone's life based on accusations related to religion. Imran should take a leading role here and make an attempt to change the mindset of those who have been brainwashed. In the current setup, only IK can do it tactfully. Regardless, justice should be provided and all those involved must be punished. And what was police doing? they said they could not control the crowd. Well, did they make any attempt? Or they assumed they wouldn't be able to control. You have got to control the crowd even if it means that you sacrifice your life, policemen were on duty and in the line of duty you don't say that you were only 20 against a crowd of thousands. Clearly, we can see who was afraid--police or the crowd. May this be the last incident in the history of Pakistan on this messed up issue of blasphemy.
Very sad incident took place in Mardan University wherein a student lost his life. The govt and the religious scholars and leaders must do something for the issue swallowing our new generation.
This is bad. FB should be bamned
@swaroop Good one! :)
This so called University must be shut down immediately and never opened again - a challenge to the PTI govt if it wants to show that it's committed to change.
brutal.. It shows the mindset of educated men. so sad
How sad. Clearly, it appears something premediated. Wonder if any action will be taken ?
Free Speech and Free Society culture takes time and it needs to be cultivated by responsible people creating a narrative that all opinions should be welcome no matter how painful or untrue they maybe but until we have that kind of mind set we cannot truly progress and just work in general for humankind.
Very heartening to see pakistani people condemning this act. I always assumed that the Pakistanis are extremely intolerant towards other religions. Glad to see there are so many voices against intolerance. Religious intolerance in both India and Pakistan will be a disaster for both the nations
Very sad, students have no right to take the law in their own hands, Pakistan have to take corrective measures, very urgent.
Sad. Givernment should educate both sides. It is a very sensitive issue but no one should be allowed to take law in hands. Interior ministry and information ministry has failed both sides. There were ongoing reports of inaction by the Government recently and I was fearful that some bad things can happen
Very sad and deplorable. Every illegal action should be dealt legally, not decided by the mobs. But again our government failed us
What a lawlessness and it is really alarming.
@Alam good thought
This law needs to be repealed. These students need to be given the exemplary punishment.
Quite right. But before this law is repealed (where are the politicians having enough courage to repeal it?) those responsible for taking law into their own hands should be dealt with severely. A law can be passed accordingly. The precedent to deal with severely already exists in the case of the murderer of a former Punjab Governor Salman Taseer.
One more life is lost in the land of pure. Looks like one of the biggest problem is the issue of intolerance in Pakistan.
This is Wali khan University and its student
sure their are PHD students and foreign branded Professors
sure this is university
where is the state ?
sad very sad
This is really grusome and heart wrecking. No one shoule be allowed to take law in their hands. Our society is already sick with so called mullahs, extremism, and ignorance. Time to take strict measures against this extremism and ill mentality.
What a sad state. It's happening in a university. Indicating what kind of future leaders and officials we will have.looks like we are going to be more radicalised
So Sad
It seems that the police also failed to do its duty in the protection of the innocent. The police, at the minimum, could have done aerial firing to disperse the crowd.
@AXH They were on campus and did nothing.
@Sharique - Munich
This is the one version of strong legal action and you approve
@MUHAMMAD FAHEEM KHAN frankly if students of a university dont know that they should not be taking the law in their own hands then that university should close down. Its the fault of everyone in our society not just scholars.
This is totally a deplorable act. The criminals must be caught and punished.
Very sad news indeed
Is there any respect/fear of law in your province Mr Imran Khan?
So sad indeed. Feel sorry for the loss of life.
Shameful and all concerned must be severely punished! Also speaks volumes for the sort of education we are imparting children in school.
Now his parents must bury him instead of seeing him graduate.
Sad to see mob rule again and again leading to murder..
To those condemning the state: what can state do if majority of it's people decide to adopt a particular way of life?
@AXH Actually police was present at the time of killing
Very sad. Heartened by the tone of comments. Hope springs eternal for a better society.
Media now should propagate how Mashal was a simple and innocent . Show the tears of his mother ,family and friend. People should know he is just another kid who want to live. Any one link to Blashemphy is not beast they are just human . But the killer and people kicking his lifeless body are the real beast
This is the ultimate test for KPK police and government and judiciary in particular and Pakistan in general, they have to bring these murderers to justice. We as citizens have to look at ourselves if we condone this behaviour, makes us as much a guilty party.
Communication students, were attacked because they were believed to be "promoting the Ahmadi faith on Facebook". if you disagree with someone else religious views should that person be killed . stop visiting his Facebook or engage him a peaceful conversation if other person like to stick to his understanding of religion leave him along . Islam doesn't allow anyone to impose his understanding of religion on another .
Sad.
Apparently the university has failed to civilize and educate. It seems to be producing no better humans than the madrassahs.
A gruesome act. We fully share the grief with the bereaved family.
I hope all the people participating in this get severe punishment for behaving like savages.
a minority of pakistani students are more interested in politics than in studies/nowhere else
This is getting out of hand. What is the government going to do to handle this jihalat?
Govt should take strict action against the accused of the incident, This is totally unbearable......and shameful.
inhumane act. all those who preach intolerance are a part of this crime.
Very very sad .This act is against the teaching of Islam . An innocent person has been killed on the name Islam.Government should take action against those who killed him.
@AXH The university management has played a key role in letting this incident happen. They saw the mob, they should've called the police at once. This is what the management lacked that led into such dreadful act.
@Mahmood well said.
A crime no less than terrorism. Blame anyone for blasphemy, he becomes the target of these lunatics. Hope the case is referred to military court.
45 people were arrested..They and their followers would be very proud to lay down their lives for the "cause".
@Nas What do you call a University? A zoo?
Shocked, amazed, dismayed, ashamed should be words used to describe vigilante behavior of this nature.
inna lillahi wa inallah-e-raji'oon
Really Pakistani people, No one came to Rescue that poor man, Is this what Islam tell you to do , SHAME on all who just stand and watch
this is not Islam
@Rashid This willnever happen.
I'm groping for words to describe my anguish over how innocent people are killed in the name of religion. This latest instance of mob justice shows a complete absence of rule of law, plus the absolute impunity fanatics continue to enjoy in a society which has become thoroughly brutalised. How many more Mashals will be put death before we are galvanised into action to corner the forces of obscurantism?
@Mansoor I absolutely agree with you!
@Masood Mukhtar after 45 arrested, now there is.
It was a gruesome and an inhuman act. All those who participated in the commission of this act are guilty of murder charges and are liable for capital punishment. This has brought a bad name to the university in the world which shall stand forever.
@Iftikhar Husain Shame on you for making such a statement! Taking things in their own hands and murdering a student or anyone else can never be justified!!
@Rashid
Pakistan is a country where every one think that they have born right to judge some one else faith. The culprits should be arrested and get the severe punishments.
Who will do that Rashid? We have created this monster ourselves.
Is there any eye witness able come fwd and share what they experienced from the incident?
I vote for IK but if u are unable to apprehend the killers IG should resign with immediate efdect.
Students are supposed to enlighten the society with their knowledge but it can only be assumed that how dangerous it is to see them behaving like animals.
When would people realise that "Killing somone innocent is like killing the whole humanity"
@Educational Universities you are right. There is something fundamentally wrong as to what is been taught.
police said there were "too many people" in the mob for them to take on.
So police don't had any other police force to be called for controlling such situations ??????????
Plz punish those police also
This is sheer madness. The accused must first be proven guilty as is the Islamic way. These people will be called to a great account where student politics will have no hiding place on the day of judgement.
Every one with blasphemy charges must be brought before the court and after fair trial punishment must be implimented if found guilty.
inquisition is back. horrible. these so-called student seem to get nothing of any education if they kill others. shame on all of them. police and politics should show that there is no easy going in such cases. get all of them and bring to justice.
@Sharique - Munich Have you not learned that the pen is mightier than the sword? Can't you answer it in a logical way if someone is wrong? I guess living in the West has not been able to take pollution and filth from your intolerant mind!!! I hope and pray the same thing happens to you!!!
Can a mob like that be called "students"?
@Farooq Jawed Wait and see how our religious leaders responds.
Absolutely shameful act done by these people. Killing someone just because of a false rumor. The perpetrator of this act should be punished as soon as possible.
Horrible Savagery
@Samir lone Yes, arrests were made - only as a temporary measure. Give it a few weeks or months and these thugs will be right back out on the streets free to kill someone else.
@Mahmood Exactly! Excellent observation!
These Pakistani people beating a lifeless body. Shame on humanity. Let alone he was only accused no proof no case just death to its own people
@Vinod narang ,Yes Sir it is deeply shameful.
@Asif A Shah what can Police do, if a particular mindset dominates the country. Even a Governor of a province couldn't be saved
What type of disgusting police would say "too many people in mob" are they retarded? I hope all the students involved get life time sentence in prison because these people are cancer of the society.
@Rahul preaching is different from actions
@Adnan Riaz ,you epeak the truth!
@Aditta... Videos are all over social media and the news channels....
need sanity of mind...i think punjan and NWFP of PAK are more aggressive and extremist in religious matters. need to isolate such elements in system.
It not about religion, but about political party is behind his killing. They have just given him a name Blasphemy to clean him. His facebook profiles must be checked.
id these are the educated folks wonder what the uneducated do ?
@Rashid sir, you live in pakistan. Justice is something that you will never get in your lifetime.
Intolerance at its peak.
@zulu state is taking action now.
PM Nawaz where is your statement over this
One word....hopeless.
No one has right to take law in his own hands
This is the result of making shrine for people like Mumtaz Qadri.
The govt. owes his family big time, but it will probably give them a cheque for 5 lakhs and call it a day.
Shame shame shame. This is extremely sad and the absolute end of intolerance.
20 policemen with guns, who were already present, could not control a mob of mostly unarmed 4,000 students? Beats one's belief in the capability of law and order in Pakistan or one is led to believe there was some sort of collusion between the two groups. Why didn't the Policemen put their lives on line and die protecting the innocent as their duty dictates?
Brutality and intolerance at its peak. Some people in Pakistan will never receive a slightest idea of what humanity is, and how it should be way above any religion. My heart cries for the victims of such cruel acts.
Very Shocking! And really Tragic!!
An individual group of people have no right to punish anyone for the crime which is related to God himself.
Indeed a very horrendous incident. A promising young man got killed so brutally. Whither Pakistan society ?
No conviction, no hearing of evidence and no fair trial.Just an accusation based punishment by the mob. Did the mob of student gave it a second thought, that how far the persons accusing the deceased are truthful, and bear no personal grudge against him...Islam as religion has been best example of tolerance and forgiveness for all mankind. Then why all this in an Islamic State. Are we heading towards extremism in our behaviors. But why? Now this is the duty of state to show earliest response on the matter. We need to educate our people on this issue.
It is more than a sad news. The fact that extremism has been deeply rooted in Pakistani society and the young generation has been mislead by Mullaiyat has destroyed the very fabric of Pakistani society. The elected leaders, other third rated politicians and civil as well as establishment must take it seriously
@Sami Ullah Swati Whatever is going on is the usual weakness and incapability of government, institutions, authorities and even state.
Unfortunately, nothing will change in a state like Pakistan. People have become extremely insensitive. Sorry.
Socially PAKISTAN is in chaotic condition...
And these guys are the students who might be admitted in Western universities to continue their studies! A serious and scrupulous checking is needed!
As the story goes, there was a mob, vigilante, comprising of student union leaders and others. They attacked two students. Police arrived when Mashal was alive. Police officers stood by and did nothing. In fact, the police made comments that let him die. This is PTI's big success. CONGRATULATIONS IMRAN KHAN AND THE WHOLE PTI. The KPK police, now we know, is criminal, corrupt and not better than Punjab and Sindh. They got this kid killed. These students or I shall say monsters, are bunch of criminals. They have no place in society. They should be tried and punished, if we are to create a peaceful society.
Pity and wrong image of our peaceful/easy religion.
ban politics in colleges because they are run by tax payers money. Instead of creating a resource for business / academics and society sadly our colleges become a breeding ground for political parties and idealogies
@Mahmood clearly you haven't spent much time in a Pakistani "university" lately.
@Uzair is it the governments job to go house to house and tell every child not to be a religious fanatic? Get real.
As i have gone through some interviews and comments, I concluded that very high position person in university is involve in this inhuman work.
@IKE if you say Police officers stood by and did nothing then GOVT. IS INVOLVED in this incident
@N_Saq excellent point
Dear brothers and sisters, not withstanding whatever goes on other issues we are with you on this side of the border. We feel and share the grief and anger, and wait for the day these mad religious bigots are banished from the society. Our heartfelt condolences for the young men's families.
@IKE - Pl do not be so disappointed. Wait for rose-petal-showering welcome by the lawyers on the identified convicts.
This is a very sad story. This should not happened. We are full of hatred, anger and frustration. Those students took out their frustration on him in this way.Things in our life are not going good.
What we are teaching our kids in the name of religion? we have taught our children the 5 pillars of Islam Roza, zakat etc. But we have not taught them the manners or etiquettes to live life. This is the main problem.
We also have to teach our kids how to respect others opinion. how to criticize. How to debate. How to argue. If someone don't believe on our religion then it doesn't mean that we should kill him. IT is our right to clear other person's concepts instead of killing.
I am from India. Let me start by saying that India is definitely no paradise and lot of religiously intolerant people reside in India too.But one thing I have the noticed is that more people of different faiths mingle, less the bias and hatred. We should all try to teach our future generations about all religions in our text books,in schools and at homes,so that when they hear about faiths different from theirs, they become more accepting. We should always teach that all religions are equal and that humanity is bigger than religion .Maybe Pakistani government should look into this in a big way and make changes in school curriculums
So you guys are judging them for judging someone ?
@Ramana Adivishnu You cannot compare apples to oranges. Be a pacifist but don't empathize with an intent to find common ground. Don't be in an illusion that overtures dipped in empathy would lead to better outcomes. The foundation still remain shaky.
Shame on the police who couldnt control. Shame on the university admin.
So what if he was Ahmadi? None of people who did this are Muslim. Infact they are not even human. Calling them animals is an insult to animals. Demons perhaps. Where is their so called love for the prophet when they are takig or givi g bribes or cheating the poor. This heinous activity has become sick fun for them line them up and shoot them all.
@Rashid not everyone..its actually fewer than majority..but they have so much pressure and backing that the rest don't have the courage to stop them..which goes against the very teaching of religion they are following
@haider what lame excuse to kill a innocent person shame on you to justify a murder
@zulu Where is the University or is it a killers den? Not one among those present at location coming out as witness ?
@Iftikhar Husain it's too early to judge people taking the law into their own hands and committing bloodthirsty violence?
Unimaginably cruel and sad incident. This is the example how intolerant and emotional our society has grown. is it that our children are not safe even in educational institutes....I shiver to think who will be next ?
A very worried citizen of Pakistan
@SRichand: sadly, it doesn't matter what the students actually wrote. What matters is that they were accused and then killed. Thus dissent has been "forestalled" as Pakistan's Higher Education Commission demands - even if the H.E.C. didn't bother to list specific methods for doing so.
so sad, but nothing new , this will continue to happen again & again
