LAHORE: DIG (Operation) Dr Haider Ashraf on Sunday suspended from service three station house officers and admonished several officers for failing to control crime in their respective areas.

The DIG was presiding over a crime review meeting of Cantonment Division at Qila Gujjar Singh police lines.

SP (Operation) Tahir Rehman, SP (investigation) Nadeem Abbas all circles DSPs and SHOs were present.

According to crime data available with Dawn, as many as 8,860 cases of crime were reported by the end of November last. The data showed that the Saddar Division police recorded the highest number (2,058) of incidents this year followed by Model Town (1,566), City (1,430), Cantonment (1,402), Iqbal Town (1,270) and Civil Lines (1,042).

In 2016, the cantonment division registered 85 murder, one kidnap for ransom, seven dacoity, 475 robbery, 17 under section 382 of PPC, 80 motorcycle snatching, six other vehicles snatching, 97 car theft and 584 motorcycle theft cases.

A total of 1,141 policemen tackled crime in the cantonment division. The number increased after the induction of Dolphin Force and Police Response Unit (PRU).

The DIG suspended Defence A and B and Baghbanpura SHOs Muhammad Raza, Ziaul Haq and Yasir Abbas from service for failing to control crime and for not taking action against drug dealers.

He also admonished and served notices on Defence C SHO Ikram Khan and also directed Defence Circle ASP Anosh Masood to improve her performance. He admonished Sarwar Road DSP Kamran Zaman for poor supervision.

The DIG issued show-cause notices to Manawan, Haiyer, South Cantonment, Baghbanpura, Harbanspura and Ghaziabad SHOs.
