Atwal Asia’s golfer of the year

BANGKOK, Dec 15: India’s Arjun Atwal capped a successful season by being crowned the Asian PGA Tour’s Players’ Player of the year.

The 30-year-old Atwal, who created history last week by becoming the first Indian player to earn a US PGA Tour card, was given the vote by his fellow professionals after a superb seaseon that saw him land the Order of Merit.

Atwal won two titles in 2003 - the Carlsberg Malaysian Open, which was jointly sanctioned with The European Tour and the Hero Honda Masters in India.

The victories made him the first player to surpass 1 million dollars in career prize money on the Asian PGA Tour.

“Ive come close to winning the merit title a few times previously and now, Ive finally won it,” Atwal said after winding up his season at the Volvo Masters of Asia here Sunday.

“When I joined the Tour here in 1995, it was my dream to get into the US PGA Tour and Ive managed to achieve this.

Atwal played in seven tournaments on the Asian PGA Tour this season and won 284,018 dollars.

In seven events, Atwal won twice and finished three times in the top-10.— APP
