KARACHI: More than Rs2 million was looted by four gunmen from a money changer’s bulletproof cash van in the Hill Park area on Monday, police said.

Both the money changer company management and the police suspected some foul play behind the incident as the cash van was armoured in which armed guards were also travelling. Apparently they did not put up resistance and it was also not known that how the robbers entered the vehicle.

According to Gulshan-i-Iqbal superintendent of police, Dr Fahad Ahmed, who also looked after the charge of Jamshed SP, the van carrying money from Bahadurabad was on its way to its office in Nursery off Sharea Faisal. Instead of taking main roads, the van drove through streets near Hill Park when the four suspects entered it and robbed it. Three persons, including two armed guards, travelling in the vehicle did not challenge the robbers.

The SP said the circumstances leading to the robbery were not clear and they suspected the involvement of all three men travelling in the van. He said it was an armoured vehicle belonging to the Paracha Exchange company.

He said the guards claimed that somehow the robbers entered the armoured vehicle through its rooftop, which was open, and it raised suspicions.

After looting Rs2.1m, the four suspects escaped in a car.

The police officer said the management of the Paracha Exchange told the investigators that they suspected their three men were involved in the robbery.

Therefore, the police took them into custody and they were being interrogated, said the SP.
