OKARA: As many as 230 workers of the Majlis-i-Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen (MWM) were booked on Sunday for blocking Lahore-Multan highway on Friday, while 17 of the 30 activists of the party nominated in the FIR were arrested.

The workers of MWM, representing Shia community, had blocked the GT road on Friday evening near Pul Jaurian in protest against the target killings of its activists in the country.

The district administration and police had got the road cleared after more then two-hour long blockade by the party activists.

Later, Renala Sadar police registered a case (FIR No 221/16) under sections 341, 506, 186, 148, 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Section 16 of Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) against 230 MWM workers.

Of the 30 people nominated in the FIR, 17 including Nazer Abbas, Subah Sadiq, Subah Saeed, Ashiq Husain, Aqeel Husain, Zaighaim Abbas, Faheem Abbas, Zakir Baber and Ali Husnain were arrested, the police claimed.

BOOKED: Dipalpur Sadar police have booked nine people, including a woman, for attacking a court bailiff and other officials and freeing a suspect whom they had arrested at Bhuman Shah village on Haveli Lakkha road.

According to police, a Dipalpur civil court dispatched a bailiff, Muhammad Shahbaz and some other officials to the village to arrest a suspect, Riaz Tahir.

The team arrested Tahir and as they were about to leave the village, Muhammad Amin, Zikaran Bibi, Samiullah, Kaleemullah and their five unidentified accomplices overpowered the bailiff and others, freeing the suspect.

Dipalpur Sadar police have registered a case on the report of bailiff under sections 186, 506, 148 and 149 of the PPC.
