BENGALURU: Veerath Bharati, who made headlines as one of India's first female cab drivers, was found dead in her rented home in northern Bengaluru on Monday, reported The Hindustan Times.

Bharati was found hanging from the ceiling in her house around 7pm by her landlord, Shankar Singh, Singh went to Bharati's house after he found her cab abandoned and could not find her. He found Bharati hanging when he looked through the window.

Singh immediately called the police, who declared Bharati dead.

Bharati's door was unlocked and police did not find a suicide note. Given the suspicious circumstances, police are now investigating the cause of death, India Today reports.

For now, they have filed a case of suicide.

Bharati was India's first woman licensed taxi driver and the first woman to drive in Uber India, according to a report by The Hindu. She lived alone in her rented house in Bengaluru, though she had recently told her landlord she wanted to move back to her hometown of Andhra Pradesh.
