Man impersonating as Kurram political agent arrested for 'threatening' men with arms

PESHAWAR: A man who claimed he was political agent of the Kurram Agency was arrested in Peshawar on Friday in a case of harassment and use of threats against two men in an incident of road rage.

Imran was accused of harassing and threatening two men with guns in an FIR registered at the Sharqai Police Station by Rahat Shah, one of the two men he allegedly harassed.

In a statement to DawnNews before his arrest, Imran claims that his son fired "aerial shots in self defence" when he thought some men where trying to kidnap his father.

SSP Cantonment Kashif, while talking to Dawn.com, said Imran was not a government officer as he had claimed. "He had been struck off government service around three months ago," said the police official.

In the footage aired by local media channels earlier today, Imran can be seen held on a roadside by two men as he tries to free himself from their grip. The video shows there is a pistol in one of Imran's hands.

Meanwhile, a minor, who Imran says is his son, enters the frame, pointing an assault rifle at the alleged attackers.

Pedestrians and passerbys are seen attempting to stop the minor from using the assault rifle and are eventually able to end the standoff, with Imran also now free.

Imran claims he was out shopping with his sons when motorcycle-riding men tried to overtake his vehicle.

"They almost smashed into me, so I pulled down my window and exchanged a few words with them."

But the verbal exchange heated up and the motorcyclists then began threatening him, says Imran. "They said they would shoot me in the head."

Imran claims they manhandled him at which his son thought they were trying to kidnap him.

"I'm a political agent, I often travel between Kurram and Peshawar and need to carry weapons with me. It's all licensed," he said.

Imran said his son did not fire at the motorcyclists and that the "aerial shots" were intended to save his father.

Meanwhile, the motorcyclist, Rahat, talking to Geo News, said shots were fired directly at him. He said the argument had begun when he overtook a car in Peshawar's Saddar area.

Rahat claimed he had approached police to register a case of attempted murder because shots had been fired at him – but police in the FIR mentioned "aerial firing" only.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's spokesman, Mushtaq Ghani, in a statement said the chief minister had taken notice of the incident, adding that "no one will be allowed to threaten unarmed people" in the province.

In the UK possession of an offensive weapons regardless of your age is an offence that carries a min of 5 years and more if the weapon is loaded and fired. Regardless of licence it does not mean that you pull out your arms and threaten the locals with it. This person must be dealt with harshly including his son so it is a lesson to others. The other two on the motor cycle should also be arrested and investigated. Its time Pakistan took charge of its civilians and enforced law and order.

One of the KP police officials claimed on national TV that the number plate on the car was fake. Was the political agent traveling with a fake number plate or was KPK police attempting a coverup?

This is what happened when you fight other people war "Afghan war" and the net result guns guns every where in Pakistan. Again check the age of the kid with the gun may be 10-12 years unbelievable I will not trust him with a knife and he carry a gun the comments of the dad unbelievable he should be punished.

During the month of Ramzan and the nation that proudly calls itself Muslims, these men have clearly demonstrated how lawless Pakistan is and how much Islam is followed in Pakistan. We have never seen anything like this on the streets of any other country in the world. We need to learn how civilised people live otherwise, people like those in the video will rule the country very soon.

Yeap this is what Pakistan has become, no law and no one even care about it. Nothing will change unless we put a ruler who knows how to rule by iron fist and put anyone away for breaking the law. Read the history of Singapore as it was worst than pakistan but look at them where they are now. So it is possible but it would require someone who cares about the country. Our current government too busy looting the country to even pay attention to such things.

This is one incident captured by a camera. Many many such incidents of badmashi happen in Peshawar. It is becoming a very toxic and anti-social city, that is why I left it. The traffic is extremely bad and people frequently violate laws and decorum. Fights on the roads are a usual thing, the ones that have arms or bodyguards treat others as low lives.

Peshawar was once a great city with good people, it has turned into a Tribal Area now. Many good educated and decent people along with their families have left Peshawar. It is also becoming very conservative and extremely religious.

@marcus : This is not UK and will take ages to be what UK is today. Besides, Political Agents in KP are required to deal and enforce the writ of the Government in lawless tribal areas. Therefore, they have to keep arms for performing their legal responsibilities. Let the CM take charge, since he has already taken the necessary notice and do the needful.

These political agents consider themselves GOD of the lawless (ruled under FCR) tribal areas. Literally every single one of them make millions through commissions and other means of corruption. They definitely think that they are above law. I know this coz couple of my friends are political agents and assistant political agents and have lived in the area myself.

@Secular Pathan -- My Pathan brother, I was born and raised in Peshawar. I was shocked to see the horrible conditions of my beloved hometown. I felt like a stranger amongst my relatives and friends. I agree with a lot you have said in your comments. The only thing I did not agree with is your reference to Tribal areas with regard to utter disregard to human life. I would not classify tribal people as reckless trigger happy people.

Unbelievable. The point here isn't whether he was a government official or not. The issue which shockingly no one is talking about is what in the hell is an assault rifle doing in the hands of a minor on our streets. Licensed or not, the boy not only had access to military grade weapons, but actually fired aerial shots. In any case, there is more than meets the eye to the story. Both parties had weapons and clearly are in no mental condition to be allowed weapon licenses if they come to fire exchange just for a traffic take over incident. The Government should take strict action against both parties to set an example.
