GHOTKI: A police constable in Ghotki, who reportedly tortured an aged Hindu man for selling edibles before Iftar, was arrested by police following a social media campaign calling for justice for the old man.
According to police, a cop named Ali Hassan – posted in Ghotki district's Hayat Pitafi town – was arrested on charges of torturing and injuring Gokal Das, an octogenarian.
SSP Ghotki Masood Bangash told Dawn that a First Information Report (FIR) had been registered in Jarwar police station under Sections 337, 504 and 506/2 of the Pakistan Penal Code against the policeman for assaulting the senior citizen.
The complainant in the case is Vindod Kumar, grandson of victim Gokal Das.
The police officer said the unfortunate incident, which drew everyone's attention, took place on Friday.
As pictures of Das showing his torture marks went viral on social media, Inspector General Sindh A.D. Khawaja also took notice of the incident, ordering immediate action.
A number of rights activists, while talking to Dawn, lauded the IG's quick response and demanded an exemplary punishment for the accused cop.
Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, sister of PPP co-chairman Bilawal Bhutto, also tweeted about the arrest of the policeman.

Good move. Our govt shud ensure tht he gets punished and not get bail. Its high time ppl in this country start to realize the Ehtiram e Ramzan doesnot mean forcefully making others fast as well or forcing them not to eat. The should know tht non muslims also live here who should be allowed to eat whenever and whereever they want. If we cant do that then we have no right to cry for atrocracies against muslims in other countries.

Punishing the culprit is not enough. The police should take Gokul Das to a hospital and foot the expenses for his treatment and be compensated properly looking into his old age and loss of income due to arm/hand injuries. Guidelines to deal with seniors be boldly pasted within police stations so that any senior wouldn't go through it again.

Extremely sad incident how could this policeman do this to an old man. Shame on this policeman. He is a non Muslim and don't need to fast like Muslim, if he was eating something in public what was the problem, this policeman could have requested Chaacha Gokal Das to go inside his home & eat at the most. As an authentic Islamic rule even if an old Muslim man is found eating or drinking during fast time he should not be reminded of the fast until the old man himself remembers about the it. Poor Chaacha Gokal Das, the nation is really sorry for the injury & harassment he suffered.

We radmit that LEAs are going out of their way and misuse their authority in performing their jobs. I would say this policeman should be terminated from the service with em mediate effect. Victim should be treated in the best possible way at the State Govrnment's expenses.

This man has not any attitude to respect and help public - the same public that pay his salary. This man should not be part of police force. It has given bad name to police department. He must go for jail for some years and his service should be terminated from police immediately. Police department should pay for Gokal Das's treatment. Gokal Das, his family should not accept policeman's apology. In this way other people like him in police department will get lesson and try to avoid this kind of adventure.

This is precisely the kind of publicity that Pakistan should avoid. These pictures circulated in the US Congress and World Parliaments confirm the belief that Pakistan is an intolerant Islamic society that persecute their minority population.
This issue must be dealt with at the grassroot level and perpetrators such as that Police Constable should be severely punished. Ramzan or no Ramzan, the Cop exhibited police brutality.

Myself with other Indian were in Iran for industrial plant commission during Ramadan.
Irani people were taking our Care they arranged break fast / lunch etc through out Ramadan for us - it was 20 year back but still we remember their hospitality

I am travelling in the US and at the hotel the breakfast is being set up daily by a kind lady in a hijab, and that is till 10 in the morning. I didn't ask her if she fasts, maybe she does and then her prayers are twice as powerful because she is able to control her hunger despite having food all around her.

Such arrests shouldn't happen after a social media uproar. It should happen by default by the works of system. If system is not appropriately designed then there would be many such incidents which will go unaddressed and only those which get captured on social media get addressed and that too only partially, only while the social media tide is high on the issue and then there is no follow up.

The police are civil servants, and they have to understand what that means. They are to serve the public, and are not to give out punishment, no matter what the crime is.
There should be ZERO tolerance against any public employe, who gives out his punishment. The police are to with up hold the law, and not break it.

This type of atrocity against an old man (irrespective of his religion) is doubly reprehensible.
He should be dismissed from service as he has given a bad name to the police force, to the country and to the society against all norms of law, justice and fairness.

Gokuldas is a 90 year old man and the policeman snatched away his walking stick and brutally beat him up. This is the kind of hatred this policeman has shown against a person probably his grandfathers age. I must add here that local Indian news show that the political ruling party have announced compensation of PKR 50,000 to Gokuldas. Yes the policeman needs to be punished but this is the kind of hatred that we see on both sides of the border by few who try to radicalise the society and then the media on either sides is quick to exploit these sentiments to increase the TRP ratings or viewership ratings.
