KARACHI: Two suspected militants were killed by policemen in an 'encounter' in the outskirts of Karachi on Saturday.

Responding to a tip off, the police encircled an alleged militant hideout near Sohrab Goth. The suspected militants reportedly opened fire at the police party.

In the exchange of fire, two militants were killed while four others managed to escape, claimed Malir SSP Rao Anwar.

SSP Anwar identified one of the deceased as Abdullah, alias Kobra, a member of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

"The men were involved in incidents of extortion, kidnapping for ransom, as well as terror attacks," the SSP added.

Arms and explosive materials have reportedly been siezed from the militants' custody.

Earlier in the day, the TTP claimed responsibility for three separate attacks across the country, killing a Frontier Corps official in Quetta and a retired major of the Pakistan Army in Karachi, and wounding a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in Peshawar.

Major (retd) Ali Raza was shot dead in Karachi's Defence Housing Authority (DHA) neighbourhood.

AIG Karachi Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar had earlier told Dawn that police is probing whether the incident was an act of targeted or sectarian killing. Later, the militant group in a statement to journalists claimed responsibility for the shooting.

At least one security official was killed and four others including a child were injured in the bomb blast on Quetta's Brewery road.

The concern is that if the government is thinking of cutting costs through the merger, we might even lose the functionality levels we currently have.
