PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan has said that measures have been taken to develop health and education sectors and stressed that it is the pressing need of the hour to devise a comprehensive strategy so that the existing resources could be utilised at optimum level.

He said doctors should strive for the betterment of the suffering humanity. He announced a grant of one million rupees for the social welfare society of Khyber Medical College and further one million for exchange programme with the University of Ohio Toledo for the higher training of the faculty of the college.

He was addressing the convocation of Khyber Medical College at the Convocation Hall of University of Peshawar on Thursday.

The ceremony was also addressed by Health Minister Shahram Khan Tarakai and KMU Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Hafizullah.

Vice chancellors of public sector universities, registrar of the university, faculty members of the college, a large number of graduating students and their parents were also present on the occasion. Governor conferred 512 degrees for the session of 2012 and 2013 and 43 outstanding performers were given gold medals. Principal of the college, Dr Aijaz Hassan Khan also presented the annual performance report.

Life-time achievements awards were given to eminent scholars, professors and doctors in recognition of their services in the field of health and education. Eleven gold medals were awarded to graduate Mamoonur Rashid, ten to Saeed Ali, six to Ambreen Subhan and four gold medals to Ayesha Aziz for their outstanding performance.

The governor, who is also the chancellor of the public sector universities in the province, said that the success of any nation was linked to pursuit of education and knowledge, adding that to make sure development of the country we needed to utilise all available resources and potential of the youth.

The governor congratulated the recipients of degrees and gold medals for their outstanding performance and said the graduating students should be well equipped to face the challenges and repay the community and serve the ailing humanity with devotion and commitment.

Appreciating the performance of the college, the governor said this institution had been making outstanding contributions to promotion of medical education and healthcare at the national level. He urged the graduating students and youth to play a constructive role in development of country.

Referring to certain issues raised by the college principal in the annual report, the governor assured them of their resolution and said he would extend all possible help in this regard and take up the issues with the provincial government and quarters concerned.
