Iran threatens Arabs as much as Islamic State: Bahrain FM

MANAMA: Iranian support for subversion in Arab states is as big a threat to the region as the self-styled Islamic State (IS) group, Bahrain's Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said on Saturday at a security conference in Manama.

"These actions are no less a threat to us than Daesh," he said, using the Arabic acronym for the group and accusing Iran of smuggling arms into Bahrain.

He added that the Houthi militia in Yemen, which Gulf states are fighting and accuse of being a proxy for Iran, which the group and Tehran both deny, can have a future in the country so long as it disarms and participates in a political solution.

US focused on 'objectionable' Iranian actions in wake of nuclear deal

US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Saturday the United States remained "laser focussed" on what he called objectionable Iranian actions including support of terrorism in the region in the wake of its nuclear deal with major powers.

Addressing the annual Manama Dialogue regional security conference in Bahrain, he added that US engagement in the Middle East, while deeper than ever, was broad and went beyond the military aspect. There was no military solution to Syria's war, he said.

On Yemen, Blinken said citizens in dire need there could not afford to wait longer for peace, and it was incumbent "on all concerned" to allow humanitarian aid to reach all who required it.

Thousands of year old rivalry between Arabs and Persians continues, both Muslims but at odds on every thing. Iran is definitely an aggressor in this case. I hope sanity prevails and they both join hands to fight the common enemy the extremism within and terror from abroad.

@Hope: was it Iran who started war in Syria and Libya? Why can't Arab use same yard stick for Bahrain and Yemen which they using the Syria. If they people want to throw out Kingdom in Syria the why not you accepting it in Bahrain, Yemen an Egypt?

Daesh (ISIS) created by Saudi Arabia Iran and Russia are trying their best to contain this monster which will in the end devour whole Muslims countries. Iran is supporting the legitimate government of Syria whereas Saudis and their cronies are supporting all sort of terrorists organisations including Daesh in Syria who is aggressor ?

@iftekhar I think you do not have any knowledge about democratic system in Iran though it is controlled democracy but much better than worst monarchies in Arab countries. Atleast people in Iran have lot of say in governmental affairs whereas in Arab countries you cannot utter a single word against the Kings or their brutal system otherwise you will be executed summarily

@ismail Actually its Iran which started the war in Lebanon, Also they did started the war in Yemen by supporting the rebels, The Islamic government there criticize Israel but never talks about Kashmir. Iran is a democracy. Arabs are not. Iran is ruled by president's and Parliament elected by it's people. Arabs have Kings imposed on it's people. Why doesn't UAE who is building super tall buildings and islands in the oceans helpPakistan by paying off its foreign debts.?

My advise to the Ruler of Bahrain is that he should abdicate his throne and declare Bahrain as a democracy and let the citizens elect there representatives. Besides Islam as a religion condemns hereditary monarchy, hence this applies to all the rulers of Arab world. At the same time this condemnation should encourage all the citizens of Arab world to rise against these self appointed tyrants.

The real threat to stability and development Mr Khalifa is the royal dictatorships of the Gulf countries and their dependancy on the Americans and allies for protection. Their narrow self interests and suspicion of Iran is historical rivalry that is pitiful and immature. They are reviled by the Muslim Ummah and in no way are valued as 'leaders'. Their conduct and lifestyles make them despicable in the eyes of all and nor worthy of respect

Historically Bahrain was an iranian province handed over to British by Qajari Emperors so it should be returned to Iran but after ruling 200 hundred years British created the Ale Khalifa monarchy to seek naval support in Persian Gulf.

The monarchy in Bahrain feels threatened by the people of Bahrain who want self governance and a representative government in Bahrain which is their legitimate demand. Blaming Iran is counter productive. In this day and age, the monarchies are outdated and therefore must end thus ushering in a democratic system in Bahrain. Let the democratically elected government in Bahrain decide the nature of its relationship with Iran which happens to be the oldest civilization in this region as well as a democracy

common guys....first gain knowledge about this region and then talk...no doubt arab monarchs are way from the islamic preaching n sharia....however this doesnt give clean chit to iranians....i have seen with my eyes how these oppositions ppl attacks policemen. ..and i have attended many funerals who were killed brutely with rods n homemade bombs, also i met with few cost guard ppl in bahrain who captured the ships coming from iran on eid ul fitr.....so niether these arab monarchs nor irani are on the right path.

When Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and its allies refer to "Arabs", they are referring to the rulers of the the Arabs. From that perspective, they are correct. Any reference to democracy is really a threat to these kingdoms.

Every gulf monarchy needs to be replaced by democratically elected presidential government, A pitch fork revolution is coming for these tyrannical rulers where there will be no refuge for them in their own lands.

I hope world including US understands Iran is the one that can bring peace.. All these Arabs are just trying to save there monarchies and has nothing to do with peace.. All they do is buy countries with oil and money to built support, but enough is enough Support Iran for peace and unity of Muslims and Middle East

If countries stop interfering in the affairs of other countries all problems will be solved. This holds frue for Iran, USA and all Arab countries. At the end of the day it will be poor Muslims who get killed and suffer. Muslim countries should sit down and sort all their differences between themselves with out involving big powers who always exploit the situation. God help Muslim countries

These fears are real and require a well thought out long term plan /.domestic response and this bitter pill no Arab govt is willing to swallow Time appears to be over for dynastic and oligarchic rule . Govt handouts are not going to endear such govts.to their people .

@Muhammad Iran has never and will ask India in case of war or anything to do with Kashmir. Even Arab states will keep away in case of conflict between India and Pakistan. They are most likely to be neutral giving banal statements in media

History tells that before revolution Iran was the most friendliest country for all of the Arabs and the Shah of Iran who was nurturing himself upon the blood of common people of Iran was regarded as the most noble person. In this regard Mr. FM is right that the way common people are now living in Iran is a definite threat to their centuries long Dynasties because they feel that same way it will happen into their Lands. And since ISIS has an agenda similar to the Arabs so they don't take it as a threat.
