Police arrest 2 teenagers in rape of toddler in India

NEW DELHI: Two teenagers have been arrested and were being questioned Sunday for allegedly raping a toddler, in the latest incident of sexual violence against a young child in the Indian capital.

Police had formed 15 teams and questioned more than 250 residents of the western Delhi neighbourhood where the 2-year-old girl was raped and left bleeding in a park on Friday night, police said.

The two 17-year-old boys were arrested late Saturday, said Dependra Pathak, a top police officer.

The toddler was playing outside her home on Friday when she went missing during a 10-minute power outage in the neighbourhood. Family members found the child lying unconscious and bleeding in a park three hours later.

In a separate incident, police on Saturday arrested three men for raping a 5-year-old in an east Delhi suburb.

The rape of the two little girls comes a week after a 4-year-old girl was found dumped near a railway track after being raped and slashed with a blade.

The assaults have caused uproar, with Delhi residents accusing the city's government of failure to protect women and girls.

In December 2012, the fatal gang-rape in New Delhi of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus led to a national outcry.

In response to that attack, the government doubled the maximum prison term for rape to 20 years, created special courts to prosecute cases more quickly, and made voyeurism and acid attacks specific crimes under the law.

India's National Crime Records Bureau says more than 2,000 girls and women were raped in New Delhi in 2014.

The government is not protecting women and girls. Has anyone at all said they were? Those arrested in the rape cases have parents who say they are not guilty. Parents who did not teach them right from wrong.

Discrimination against women in south Asian countries is rampant. Men consider themselves to superior to women, this brings culture of rape and suppression of their rights. In India although rules are made tougher against rape and onus to prove not guilty of rape if a woman complain against any man. But conviction rate is low, which makes men thinks it is not risky to violate modesty of girl or woman. It is the duty of parents and religious leaders to change the mind set of men to consider woman equal and respect them. If we don't do this this worse than animal behaviour of men towards women shall continue.

Every country has bad apple. India is a country of 1.2 billion people. Imagine managing that many people. India is not even in the top rape crime country, it is U.S.A , U.K and European countries. So stop bashing India all the times, take a break!

@Abdulla Hussain I agree with you. Bollywood has its part to play in eroding our values by introducing soft porn in all movies and idolizing porn stars like Sunny Leone in the mainstream media. Off course, Bollywood is part of the problem.

2000 rapes in 365 days is what which were reported ?.. in sub-continent such incidents are abundantly not even reported for many reasons, unfortunately. Police arrested a juvenile 17 year old and sooner will be set free for his age. End of story and ras-leela will remain intact. hopeless situation in a country of 1.2 billion people who could not yet design at least a sort of punishment for this inhuman crime. no moral or social boundaries, do whatever you like and no one will catch you.... their media is responsible for such crimes which shows an imaginary world of money, glitz, fashion, glamour, billionaires, biz tycoons, boy-friend culture, semi nude girls, sexual acts openly and those who are in masses cannot afford to enter a fake hi society culture, will find satisfaction in such activities.. their moral standards ?. entire country feels proud by letting Salman Khan as their hero despite being a convict in murder case... what else you expect from such a society ?.

@Amit we can keep blaming Bollywood,internet ,the girls's provocative clothing etc etc and shy away from the real problem.Which is son being taugt to behave and not daughters being taught to stay safe. till that happens you can keep blaming these things which will take you harther from a solution

If each and everyone one of us as parents decide to teach our sons to behave themselves and treat women with respect and moreover all men treat their wen with respect at home such incidents will decline.Bollywood or internet doesn't cause these crimes but poor and irresponsible parenting does.All parents remember to teach their daughters to behave but forget to do the same for their sons,who are taught from day one that they are above their sisters and wives.Hence the lack of respect and value for the females amongst these men.Let our generation be the change.
