LAHORE, Oct 12: The Punjab government is “all prepared” to sell around half a million tons of wheat to the international donors for Afghan refugees, it is learnt.

“The wheat will be sold to the donors through the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL),” sources told Dawn here on Friday..

The ministry, sources said, was likely to receive two requisitions — 93,000 tons from the World Food Programme (WFP) and 350,000 tons from the UNHCR.

The WFP which has already borrowed 30,000 metric tons of grain from the Punjab has asked the provincial government to loan another consignment of 40,000 tons.

Meanwhile, the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has placed two more requisitions with the Punjab Food department for the supply of 10,000 tons and 25,000 tons of wheat, respectively.

The TCP also intends to float another tender for 200,000 tons of wheat for the provincial food department in the near future, it is learnt.

Against an earlier contract of 217,000 tons with the TCP, the food department has so far supplied 15,000 tons of wheat.

Sources said the fresh requisitions for 10,000 and 25,000 tons of wheat were effective from Oct 10 and Oct 25, respectively.
