Iran expels Bahrain envoy in 'apparent' retaliation: state media

TEHRAN: Iran has expelled a senior official from Bahrain's embassy in Tehran in an apparent retaliation after Bahrain did the same to its envoy in Manama.

“The number two official in Bahrain's embassy in Iran is persona non grata and Bassam al-Dossari must leave Iran's territory within 72 hours,” the official IRNA news agency quoted a foreign ministry statement as saying late Friday.

Bahrain on Thursday recalled its ambassador from Iran and ordered Tehran's envoy to leave within 72 hours, citing Iranian “interference” in its affairs.

However, Iran has rejected “the baseless accusations from Bahrain."

"Tehran has not and will not interfere in Bahrain's internal affairs and reacts accordingly to Bahrain's actions," Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian told state television on Friday, adding that the kingdom is “evading its internal problems by passing the buck, instead of solving them.”

The Gulf kingdom of Bahrain has suffered from unrest since a pro-democracy uprising in 2011.

On Friday, Bahrain took its protest to the United Nations by submitting a complaint against Iran.

“Iran has chosen the path of escalation in an attempt to exert control over its neighbours by continuing to interfere in internal affairs of neighbouring countries," BNA news agency quoted Bahrain's Foreign Minister Khaled bin Ahmed al-Khalifa as telling UN chief Ban Ki-moon.

Bahrain is part of an Arab coalition, led by Iran's regional rival Saudi Arabia, that has been striking Yemeni rebels for over six months.

The coalition accuses Iran of arming rebels in Bahrain and Yemen.

It is interesting that Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and UAE can attack Yemen, support rebel fighters, create ISIS in Syria and Iraq and then blame Iran for interfering in other countries. This is the height of hypocrisy.

@subasish - Before making a nonsense statement, you need to understand the politics of that region. Bahrain is primarily a Shia-majority country ruled by the Sunni minority. Its monarchy has always had backing of countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc. It does not matter whether you try to insert Modi or anyone else, things will always go the way that KSA and UAE would want. There is nothing wrong with dreaming a dream.

Supper powers already been interfering in Baharin internal affairs for long time, but Kings of Bahrain don't have guts to say no to them, because they will lose their kingdom. Time to end "Kingdom System" in Bahrain and let the people pick their leader by election not selection. Iran did the right thing to kick Bahrain's Embassy officials out of Iran.

@subasish ...lol how? You forgot Pakistan's geo strategic location proximity to oil rich middle east and central Asia even India uses Pakistan waters to carry oil from middle east.the on going projects such as CPEC and TAPI gas pipeline are not for set back.

@subasish We do not have any problems with India getting FDI. You as a nation need to chill out and act like a big mature country rather than a little child throwing tantrums at everything and blaming Pakistan. Please send Modi everywhere we do not have any problems but do not blame Pakistan for everything bad in this world. Stop hating other fellow humans on the basis of religion as well and stop brain washing general public to hate a particular community. Peace fid everyone.
