NAROWAL: The Saddar police on Thursday caught a man impersonating a former inspector general of Punjab.
Saddar police SHO Malik Muhammad Nadeem received a phone call from a man who introduced himself as Naseem Ahmed, ex-IG, and asked him to release a person police had arrested in a case FIR No 227/15.
The SHO told the caller that he would release the arrested person after investigation.
Soon afterwards a man arrived at the police station and introduced himself as a relative of the arrested man. The SHO rang the caller who had introduced himself as a former IG and found out that it was the number of the person sitting in front of him who impersonated a provincial police chief.
On further probe the caller was identified as Hafiz Muhammad Akhtar, a resident of Gujranwala’s Gakkhar Mandi.
Police arrested him and registered a case under sections 170, 419, 420 of PPC and section 25-D of the Telegraphic Act.
Investigation officer SI Muhammad Riaz said the suspect would often make phone calls impersonating senior government functionaries.
