Pakistan ready to respond to any 'short' or 'long' war: Khawaja Asif

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif on Thursday responding to the Indian army chief's statements earlier this week, said that Pakistan is ready for a small scale or prolonged war if Indian leadership proceeded with the same, Radio Pakistan reported.

Asif said that Pakistan is a firm believer of peace in the region and world at large, but was fully prepared to respond 'befittingly' if provoked.

"Our forces crushed the Indian dreams of occupying Lahore back in 1965 and will do the same in future," the defence minister said.

He said that Pakistani forces have been fighting a war against terror on their own soil and are ready to deal with any external enemy, if the need arises.

Asif claimed that the country’s political leadership ─ including the prime minister ─ would not hesitate to offer any sacrifice for the defence of Pakistan if the two countries were to lock horns.

Indian Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh on Tuesday had said that India is prepared to face offensive military action on its borders should the need arise, and that any future conflict was expected to be short and swift.

Indian newspaper The Hindu had quoted him as referring to the ceasefire violations along the borders in Jammu and Kashmir, which have put relations between India and Pakistan under strain.

Wars are never swift and short. After WWII US went to Korea to defeat communism. US went into Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam to defeat communism . US went to Afghanistan to finish Taliban after 9/11. In all these the cases the wars were not swift or short.

K. Asif should not make needless remarks. It is not necessary to respond to every Indian statement. India and Pakistan both know each others military strength so why keep talking about it? I don't know if the conflict is really the Territory of Kahmir between Inda and Pakistan. If really is then the issue of Kashmir must be settled once for all. For how many years the two neighboring countries would fight like a child. The establishment of both countries must know that both countries are atomic powers and the possible war between the two would never be conventional and disastrous equally for both . If India thinks that Kashmir's are rightly with them then India should not show reluctance to follow UN resolution over Kashmir. Similarly, Pakistan should put pressure over UN to resolve the issue with the diplomatic efforts. Giving senseless statements from both side would resolve nothing but ignite fire and provide the opportunity to all the hate and war mongers on both sides of border to spit venom on each other.

Ok enough of this school playground rhetoric. First of all this is not 1965 or 1971. Secondly Indians know exactly what damage Pakistan can inflict in case of any short/long/surgical strike etc and at the same time Pakistan knows what Indians can do so let's not remind each other of this on daily basis. Indians will never attack Pakistan in short or long war as there are too many advanced weapons and nukes in play so it won't benefit them at all. What benefits them is to create chaos in Pakistan thru terrorism via their proxies so Pakistan is bogged down in one issue or another in perpetual state. Identify these actors and eliminate them once and for all and India will be put back in it's rightful place.

Both countries have tremendous talent and that should be channelized in right direction.There should be people to people connect.Borders should be open just like the countries in EU have. @Sheena You got it all wrong. Rocket Science is simpler than Kashmir problem. Both countries want the land not the people in particular. So the guy is asking for novel idea as solution. I was thinking, may be we can create an Island where currently the Gulf of Oman is. From there, the Island should border Iran, Dubai, Karachi, Ahmedabad and Oman extending to the Arabian Sea. We call it Kashmir and it should be an independant country where all the Kashmiri's can live in peace.

Pakistan should understand that that our navy is so weak that Indians can easily surround us quickly from southern sea. We are no match to India along international border. Indian train can reach to almost all the cities near international borders mobilizing troops in a short time. We still have difficulty connecting western border with eastern by rail routes.

I think both govt Indian and pakisthan have secret understanding that whenever they are faced with internal problems the military talks about War to divert the attention of masses. Both India and pakisthan people need education, food,shelter and peace. They are not ready for war.but the easiest way to arouse people is fear and talk of War is the ultimate way of making people tense. I also feel the govt of both sides want to keep border tension alive so that they can easily divert attention

War is the wrong narrative. Politicians on both sides aren't realizing the cost that the affected population will bear in the aftermath of this cynical exercise. Reports are coming out that India was ready to attack Muridke back in 2008, I don't know how Pakistan can receive such news with much optimism. India initiated it again and escalating war mongering again. Pakistan army has no choice but to be ready as situation isn't normal anymore. I won't blame Khwaja Asif here, though politically I have strong disagreements with his Govt. Hindustan Times wrote last week that 'if Indian jets crosses the border, they aren't coming back'; so I can tell at least some quarters in India are well aware of consequences India's inviting. Here's hoping that sense prevails and war narrative will be put to rest in the larger interest of people on both sides.

@Kamal Pasha why? War between Israel and Egypt etc in 1967 lasted only for 6 days and Israel won. 1971 Indo Pakistan war lasted only for 13 days and you know who won. Anyway war is not the answer particularly when both are nuclear countries. Let peace prevail.

Actually in India, the RSS which is backing the hindu government BJP wants a war with Pak,so that they can garner hindu support for future elections. They want to prove hindus are superior to Muslims in case Pakistan suffers more than India like in 1971 war. They want to damage the Pak economy which is reviving after a long period. Nothing else other than this.

They should both simultaneously withdraw troops from Kashmir and give Kashmiris their independence and statehood. Allow all Kashmiris to return to Kashmir and live in peace and co existence and neutrality between its 3 giant neighbours Pakistan, India and China. Only then will peace prevail in the sub continent.

When there is a will there is always a way out. If Pakistan start taking care of only it's citizen and stop talking of K word, I am 99.99percent sure there will a peace starting from same moment. Kashmir will be more peaceful then ever if LOC is made an international border. No military personals around LOC . You will see there will be a peace and prosperity in Pakistan and India both. I can't say about India because we have a long border with China but Pakistan will save a tons of money what it spends for it's military now plus human loss in both country.

They are not a Real Estate, they are real people who are main casualty in all this madness, they can't be kept out of decision process. @Padmakar, India A sane voice from India. You have to see it from Pakistani perspective, RAW is involved in funding sponsring Karachi unrest, involved in Baluchistan and supporting TTP. Now due to Army operation the have been neutralized to large degree and multibillion dollar pact CPEC is under way. Since then Modi/Indian army have escalated tensions on the borders and created war hype. Pakistan is responding, and has the right to do so. Majority are against war but if one imposed then it will be brought to its logical conclusion.

Both countries spend huge sums of money on armaments while their citizens are hungry, homeless, without social security, retirement for old age and basic necessities . Why dont you make the borders irrevant by openning trade and cultural exchanges than sticking to mad made barriers. The people of India and Pakistan share the same Dna. As someone who no longer has any stake in an India-Paksistan war or who wins it, I would like to urge the civilian leadership in Pakistan to resist any pressure to initiate or fight a war. The few wars that has been fought in last 68 years since independence from the British, only has resulted in lots of orphans, widows, bereaved mothers and destruction. Pakistan would have been a much better developed country and its people would have a better quality of life if all this expenses were not incurred on military hardware and related costs!!!

In 1965 India attacked Lahore after repeated warnings to Ayub Khan that if Ayub did not stop the war he initiated in Kashmir the India will attack at its chosen front. So, it looks that India attacked Lahore strategically and not to occupy Lahore. It is Ayub who miscalculated and was not ready despite warnings .
