MQM committee defends Altaf’s speech

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) denied on Sunday that its London-based chief Altaf Hussain had talked about seeking “help from India, Nato and the United Nations” in his speech at a party programme held in the United States on Saturday.
The MQM coordination committee held a late-night press conference in response to widespread criticism of Mr Hussain’s latest remarks.
Party leader Dr Farooq Sattar said Mr Hussain’s speech was within the parameters of the Constitution of Pakistan.

“The MQM and Altaf Hussain are inseparable,” he declared. “He is struggling for the rights of Mohajirs and [was] speaking on behalf of 50 million Mohajirs.”
In response to Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan’s remarks that Mr Hussain was giving controversial statements because of cases against him in London, Dr Sattar said they had been pending for five years. “Has Altaf Bhai been speaking like this for the past five years?” he asked.
He said Altaf Hussain had held pro-military rallies in Karachi, but the ongoing targeted operation in the city had been turned against the MQM.
He claimed that scores of MQM workers had been ‘missing’, dozens had been killed in an extrajudicial manner and hundreds detained without charges.
“No-one is listening to us... What should we do if we don’t get justice,” he said, adding that the MQM had demanded a judicial commission on the issue but it had not been set up.
“Is this an unjust demand?” he asked.
He said: “We should be told who will ensure an impartial investigation into enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings of our workers.”
The MQM committee also criticised statements of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Balochistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti about Mr Hussain’s speech and said he had spoken only the truth.
The committee asked why the chief minister had remained tight-lipped when Defence Minister Khawaja Asif issued an allegedly provocative statement against the armed forces.

The down turn of MQM has started. It seems the way they dealt Karachiites the same they have been treated. People are looked happy and satisfied. The daily bread earner and businessmen of the city are more confident than before to do their jobs rather than to count killings and scare ransoms while sit at home because of every second day strikes.

I don't envy the job of the MQM media people. It seems every other day they are asked to perform logical acrobatics to justify, minimize and reinterpret the increasingly unhinged outbursts of their Quaid.
I would give them an A for effort, an A for loyalty, but nevertheless an F for effectiveness because at the end of the day you can't defend the indefensible irrespective of how adept you are at deflecting, dissembling and sophistry.

There is NO denying of MQM as a pllitical force. But their leadership has to come out clean. The fact is that sindh is divided in 2. Urdu speaking will not vote for sindhi speaking and sindhi will not vote for urdu speaking. Especially interior sindh really dont have any choice but to bote for ppp. karachi may give a couple of seats to pti or PPP. One should seriously consider making of smaller units. It is the logical option.
Ppp talks about splitting punjab all the time. Why not sindh????
Probably both mqm and ppp will not need tgeir militant wings then if the power is split.

In Australia the PM got rid of the speaker of the house for misuse of just $5000 for a helicopter ride for party function which was not for govt business. He was forced to take action by his own party members who threatened him with his own leadership because it was causing angst amongst the public. The representative of (so called) 50 million muhajirs remains in almost all govts since 1988. and were contineously in power 1999 to 2013, and partially since 2013 why the grievnces of muhajirs are not removed, what they were doing in successive govts is an open secret. Nobody all over Pakistan against Karachities (MQM called them muhajirs as and when situation so arises) and they are free to vote a party of their choice. Be fair to Karachities and expel crminal elements from MQM

@Asgher Ali : Sir, It's not us who claim ourselves Muhajir. It's the mindset of people out side Karachi who call us Muhajir's or urdu speaking. Well there is no harm in it unless you have been discriminated on such grounds. Please don't be so naive and accept that we are facing such kind of behavior from our country man else what is the logic of asking the stupid question, Aap ka taa'luq Kahan say hay ? Just answer him "Karachi" and feel the difference.

We must drop double standards and stop twisting facts if we want to save Pakistan. Didn't PPP ask for UN and Scotland Yard help? Didn't PML-N seek and use KSA intervention and help? Didn't PML-N and PTI supported and got support from Talibans? Is Government not seeking UK's help? MQM has only asked for UN investigation into treatment of its workers and supports. Government has already banned AH's speech broadcast in Pakistan as AH or MQM does not exist; then why to worry about what they say.

bad governance from PPP will keep the MQM support intact. PTI is a alternative but they would not be able to form a gov as people in interior Sindh are not getting enough coverage of what PTI is saying. thanks to Pervaiz musharref PML n has lost its footing in sindh.

@Keenobserver and others: The apparently peaceful situation in Karachi is temporary. Rangers have been in Karachi for more than 25 years and Karachi has seen many minor and major operations. The current tactics have been tried in the past. These are not permanent solutions. The permanent solution is to respect the people's political choice. Despite MQM's limited influence in respective governments, Karachi has seen the most progress and development when MQM got elected and managed LBs - whether it is under mayorship of Farooq Sattar in 80s or Mustafa Kamal in 2000s.

Any one who defends leaders, talking against the nations soverignity, must be brought back and tried for treason. Mohajirs will never support foreign troops to enter pakistan. These people and their forefathers gave everything to make this nation, not for it to be betrayed in their name. dear @chaudhary in todays dynamic world there is no such thing as permanent peace. we should appreciate fact that karachi is now improving visavis law and order. when people like you question status of peace in karachi it seriously seems you dont like workers of political parties with criminal record being apprehended. nothing is absolute but we should appreciate good things done by LEAs.

I would ask what are their demands, what unjust is being done to them, what problems they have ....
are they not getting:
- jobs ?
- electricity
- education
- employment
- political presentation
- social life
- communal life
- passports / NICs
- govt jobs
- protection as good as for other citizens ?
- army enrollments ?
- police employments ?
- inter community marriages ?
what are their demand, please some one share with us as what exactly they are not getting for which that UK-Guy is struggling and fighting. and what kind of justice 'they' want to have just for themselves. please Dawn throw some light on such issues... earnestly seeking reply.

Pakistan does not understand the problem. Rightly or wrongly over 20 million of the 25 million Muhajirs (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren of people born in pre-partition India) in Karachi and Sindh support Altaf. How can you erase that. THAT is the dilemma. The only solution would have been the rise of someone else to represent the interests of these 20 million. Who is that?? That is where the 'sons of the soil', the Army, the bureaucracy, the feudals, the industrialists, the intellectuals have failed. That is why Altaf is where he is in terms of his hold on these 20 million.

@kamal Can you please give a few examples of how exactly and where the so called mohajirs are being discriminated against in Pakistan? It's all well for MQM to keep singing this tune but where exactly is the discrimination? I have come across Urdu speaking (Mohajirs according to MQM) who are doctors, lawyers, airline pilots, policemen, army officers, politicians and everything in between so I have no idea what the MQM supporters are talking about.

I'm sorry but mohajirs aren't being persecuted in Karachi. You paint the wrong picture when you say mohajirs are being targeted in Karachi. Secondly not all mohajirs are pro mqm. That is another wrong perception.

@Ailly Just look at the Sindh govt. 99.9 percent of all top positions are held by Sindhis. Al district management positions , all police positions (even in Karachi and hyderabad) are held by Sindhis. They have something called Quota System which makes sure that nobody can get a job in the government except Sindhis. Same holds for education.

@mirza governor of sindh is a mohajir. Army chief btwn 1999 and 2007 was mohajir. No Sindhi ever held post of army chief but Sindhi's don't protest and raise voice of discrimination. Secondly protest doesn't mean abusing and maligning state institutions. PPP protested against hanging of ZAB yet never abused the army or called for raw's help
