KARACHI: Police claimed to have killed five militants and two gangsters in three encounters in the city on Wednesday.

The suspected militants were killed in Orangi Town.

According to Karachi-West SSP Azfar Mahesar, policemen in two mobiles were busy in snap checking in Zia Colony of Orangi Town. They signalled a motorcyclist to stop, who was being followed by a car. But, the man opened fire at the police and tried to flee. In the meantime, the people in the car also fired at the police.

The policemen retaliated and chased the fleeing suspects. In the ensuing exchange of fire, the motorcyclist and four suspects in the car were killed, the SSP said. Two “ball bombs,” three grenades, three pistols and two Kalashnikovs were seized on them, he added.

Two suspected gangsters were killed in two `encounters’ in Chakiwara and Timber Market areas.

City SSP Fida Hussain said the deceased belonged to the Baba Ladla group and had been involved in targeted killings, extortion and kidnapping for ransom.
