Swimming training compulsory for cops: KP IGP

PESHAWAR: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Nasir Khan Durrani on Thursday announced compulsory swimming lessons for the provincial police force in order to prepare them for duty in flood-affected areas.
Speaking to journalists at a police Eid Milan party in Peshawar IGP Durrani said the police should be prepared to facilitate the masses in all respects. He said a request had been made to the Pakistan Navy to train the police force in this field.
The IGP said that police officers taking part in flood relief activities face difficulties because they are not able to swim. Durrani said that training would help the police work more efficiently in flood-affected areas.
Answering a question, Durrani said that the presence of Daesh or the self-styled Islamic State (IS) on the Afghan side of the border could not be ignored. He added that the police were trying to hinder foreign funding of terrorists.
At least 0.3 million people have been affected by floods in Chitral, while the Indus River inundated at least 150 villages in Layyah.
At least 14 were swept away in Balochistan's Shah Noorani and Sakran areas of Lasbela and Khuzdar as the region was hit by flash floods following heavy rainfall.
In the past week, at least six people have died in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and three in Rawalpindi due to heavy rains.

@SHAHRYAR Obviously but when areas have been flooded and the water currents have subsided then it would helpful that the Police officers can swim so they can carry out relief activities and not worry about drowning themselves in standing water.

This is supposed to be done by special training not by swimming in the pool;may be good for their health but this will be a non professional act.

These decisions should have been taken long before the problems come up. Why waiting for the problems all the time? This proactive thinking must be seen from other provincial governed areas as well. Khata sahab and IK, don't live in the fool's world. Face the reality. Face the challenge now.

it is a fantastic idea they have to loose their over weighted tummies.... A recent police study found that you're much more likely to get shot by a fat cop if you run....

There are many places in the flood affected areas where water is stagnant after flood peak time and a person with basic swimming skills can do enough to help the victims .....

atleast this move by kpk seems better in terms if consider with metro bus move.and @SHAHRYAR atleast kpk cops will be able to swim in water filled metro bus stations.can punjab police swim there huh

Very good initiative. I think what should be emphasized is that All over the world, even kids have compulsory swimming training. It would at least give confidence to the police officers that their own life is not at risk.
Though, it is a different thing to swim and save someone's life but a very good way forward.

Swiming training is obiously mandatory for cops, but are you saying you are going to ask them to jump in flood situation? This is stupid idea, better you order some boats and make a distaster management department like very efficient India has.

Activities like swimming foster creativity and positive thinking. Government should invest in sports complexes around the country so masses too can use them instead of wasting their time on tv and internet

@syed wasim haider@hotmail.com I am a Swimmer and you do not know the benefits of it, you help yourself and people around you. I swam during Ramadan and had energy all day even without electricity. Yes, you can have special training on top of it.

Swimming should be compulsory for all forces including police. However there should be proper disaster management cells in every district of Pakistan which you be well equipped and trained they can take the lead in such events and direct civilian volunteers and police and others to help out in emergencies. More importantly early warning systems and preventive measures should be taken to minimise impact of such disasters..we also need to build big dams to store all this water and use it

Swimming is good, every one should learn; however, rescue operations need lot more specialized training and cannot be learned in short time. It also needs other supporting materials, boats, life jackets, diving gear, helicopters, etc. Just to be in Navy doesn't mean that person can save someone's life with out proper training.
