ISLAMABAD: The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has floated an inquiry into the fare mechanism of the intercity transport companies and has sent ‘calling for information’ notices to three major players in the field.

The notices seeking relevant information have been issued to Daewoo Pakistan Express Bus Service Limited, Niazi Express and Kohistan Bus Service under the Section 36 of the Competition Act, 2010.

“The inquiry is being conducted by the CCP regarding the possible anti-competitive activities in the intercity bus commute service,” spokesman for the commission said.

The notices have been passed by Ikramul Haque Qureshi, member of CCP’s Cartels and Trade Abuses department, after the companies failed to respond to the commission’s previous requests for information.

The companies have been ordered to provide information regarding pricing trends of all categories of buses, on all major routes, over the last three years. The companies have been asked to submit the required information within 10 days.

“Failure to provide the required information may render the three bus companies liable to pay a penalty of up to Rs1 million for non-compliance under Section 38 of the Competition Act,” the spokesman said.
