PESHAWAR: An alleged robber was killed and his accomplice arrested during an encounter in the limits of Chamkani police station here on Thursday.

According to SSP Mian Saeed, who is responsible for police operations in Peshawar, a group of armed men had snatched R1.45 million from one Abdullah of Takht Bhai, Mardan, an accountant of a private construction firm, and were trying to flee when police reached the spot.

He said that on seeing the police the armed men opened fire on the law enforcers and in the ensuing encounter one of the alleged robbers identified as Imran of Nauthia Jadid sustained bullet injuries and later died. He said that the other suspect Mohsin Iqbal of the same locality was arrested and weapons were recovered from their possession.

He said that the police also recovered the cash from possession of the armed men.

Another official of Chamkani police station said that the accountant had drawn the cash from a bank in Peshawar Saddar and was on way to his office in a car that the robbers snatched the cash from him at gunpoint. The accountant’s timely information to the local police helped foiled the robbery attempt. He said that a passer-by was also injured during the encounter, but his name could not be ascertained.

In another incident, one Iftikhar of Dabgari was wounded when two unknown armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on him in the limits of Shah Qabool police station. A police official said that the injured person was shifted to Lady Reading Hospital and his condition was stable.
