RAWALPINDI: The ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) on Friday started interviewing aspirants for the cantonment board elections in Rawalpindi and Chaklala.

The party will announce the names of the candidates next week.

A committee, comprising Senator Chaudhry Tanveer, PML-N City president Sardar Naseem, Haji Pervaiz, Malik Shakil Awan, MNA Malik Abrar, MPA Malik Iftikhar, MPA Sarfraz Afzal, MPA Raja Hanif, Malik Ghulam Raza and Chaudhry Ayaz, met at the Chaudhry Tanveer house and decided to hold the interviews in two days.

On the first day, over 231 candidates appeared before the committee.

“Each candidate was asked to give an oath that he would not leave the party if the ticket was given to someone else on the basis of merit,” a member of the committee requesting not to be named told Dawn.

The candidates were also asked to give the names of their alternatives in case of the rejection of their papers by the returning officers.

He said the committee was facing problems in selecting the candidates as mostly old workers had applied for the tickets.

The PML-N wanted to select those candidates who had a good reputation in their areas.

He said the party would ask more than five candidates to submit their nomination papers in each ward.
