Moral responsibility

Published January 25, 2015

VALDIS Dombrovskis resigned as Latvia’s prime minister in November 2013, taking full responsibility for the collapse of a supermarket roof which resulted in the death of 50 people.

The Yemeni president, the prime minister and his cabinet have recently resigned amid reports that rebels have taken control of government headquarters.

Similarly in May 2010, UK Treasury Minister David Laws resigned over national expenses he used to pay rent to his partner.

These three resignations are examples of accepting moral responsibility.

In Pakistan, politicians do not resign. Instead, every single incident as a result of government inefficiency is followed by condemnation and formation of a committee, which works and gives result to ghosts.

From the Model Town incident to the Peshawar massacre, from the energy crisis to the petrol shortage, every time our rulers appear to be busy in search of a scapegoat.
