Firing on aircraft

Published October 22, 2014

THIS refers to a recent firing incident on a passenger aircraft at Peshawar airport. This is the second such incident at the same airport. A woman died from bullet wounds and two crew members were injured in the first incident.

It is a pity that neither the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government nor the director-general of the Civil Aviation Authority has taken any action to stop this criminal act.

It was stated by the KP inspector-general of police after the first incident that a campaign would be lunched to check all highrise buildings surrounding the landing strip of the airport. But, it appears, that no such measures have been taken as far as the case of Jinnah International Airport in Karachi is concerned.

The CAA and the two provincial governments need to pay attention to these two airports so that safe havens of terrorists can be detected and destroyed.

I disagree to the idea of restricting flights to only daytime as it hardly makes any difference for terrorists who can select any flight landing in Peshawar in the day. Furthermore, how long will the CAA take to install instrument of landing?
