LAHORE: A four-year-old boy fell into an open manhole in Quaid-i-Azam Industrial area and was retrieved dead on Tuesday.

Ayaz said his son, Zahid, was playing on the greenbelt of Pindi Stop in Green Town when he fell into the manhole. At that time, Ayaz was fixing his auto rickshaw by the manhole.

Rescue 1122 officials retrieved the body from the manhole and shifted it to Children’s Hospital.

The relatives of the boy blocked the road and also staged a protest demonstration against the Water and Sanitation Authority outside the chief minister’s camp office in Model Town.

A police officer negotiated with the protesters and assured them that a case would be registered against the authorities.

Protesters alleged despite their several complaints, the civic body did not cover the manhole.

They said there were two more uncovered manholes in the locality. The managing director of the Wasa took notice of the incident.

Sadar Division SP Ijaz Shafi Dogar told Dawn that they were trying to determine who was responsible for the mishap.
