ISLAMABAD: The first meeting of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Election Reforms will be held on Wednesday.

When contacted, a senior official of the National Assembly Secretariat said the committee in the first meeting would elect its chairman.

After the chairman’s election, he said, the committee members would formulate the terms of reference for the smooth functioning of the committee.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had notified the constitution of the 33-member bi-partisan committee on July 25 “to evaluate the shortcomings of the previous electoral process and make recommendations to hold free, fair and transparent elections” in future.

Sources in the PML-N told Dawn that the government had decided to propose the name of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to head the committee.
