RAWALPINDI: A Rawalpindi court convicted two individuals and sentenced them to death on two counts each for a murder case, and acquitted a third suspect this Tuesday.

Mohammad Afzal and Faisal Rehman were accused of murdering Rafaqat Hussain, a jeweller, on September 29, 2011.

According to the prosecution, Hussain knew the two men, and sought their help in buying a car.

On September 28, 2011, Hussain went to the sales outlet on Islamabad Highway where they worked carrying Rs90,000.

The two men drugged him and stole his money, and then killed Hussain.

They also took his mobile phone and used it to call a friend and inform him of the incident.

They then buried Hussain near Islamabad Highway.

The murder was revealed after the deceased’s relatives contacted the police, who then traced Hussain’s call history to the murderers’ friend. Upon questioning, the friend admitted that Afzal and Rehman had murdered the man.

The two men were then arrested and brought before Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Naveed Iqbal.

After a three year trial, ADSJ Iqbal sentenced Afzal and Rehman to death, and has imposed a Rs200,000 fine on each of them.
