QUETTA: The Pak-Afghan border at Friendship gate in Chaman was closed Friday morning, a day before the Afghan presidential elections are scheduled to take place, an official said.

An official of the Frontier Corps (FC), a para-military force, told Dawn.com that the border was completely closed by the border forces of the two countries.

He said the major reason behind closure of the border was to avert any untoward incident on the eve of Afghan polls.

"The border will remain closed on Saturday," he said.

Personnel of paramilitary troops were deployed on the Pakistani side of the border to maintain order on the eve of historic Afghan elections.

Similarly, the Afghan border force has also strengthened security to ensure peace on the eve of polls.

"There are long queues of vehicles on both sides of the border," the FC official stated, adding that people on both sides were facing problems as result of closure of border.

Taliban rebels, in recent days, have intensified attacks in Afghanistan in general, particularly the volatile Southern region due to presidential elections and scheduled withdrawal of US-led coalition forces from the war-torn country.

Closure of the border has come two days after a blast killed two and injured 13 others in the Waish Mandi area on the Afghan side of the border.

According to Afghan police, Taliban rebels had targeted the vehicle of Afghan police.
