PESHAWAR, June 25: The Naib Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami and MMA MNA, Shabbir Ahmed Khan, has asked the federal and provincial governments to allocate more funds for the development of the provincial metropolis.

Speaking at a news conference here on Wednesday, the MMA MNA thanked Chief Minister Akram Durrani and senior minister Sirajul Haq for taking a keen interest in the solution of the problems being faced by the people.

He said despite the fact that conspiracies were being hatched by certain elements, the MMA government had undertaken numerous development schemes relating to water, electricity and gas.

An amount of Rs400 million had been allocated for women university, whereas Rs5 million would be spent on establishing high schools for girls, he added.

Giving details of other development programmes, Shabbir Khan said Rs1.6 million would be spent on construction of primary schools at Khalid bin Walid Colony and Latifabad, and Rs3.3 million for the establishment and up-gradation of primary schools in other parts of the city.

Similarly, for construction of new rooms in primary schools Rs19 million had been earmarked.

The Kohati Gate high school would be upgraded to middle level at a cost of Rs6 million, while Rs5.5 million were being spent on the completion of a water supply scheme and construction of science block at the Government College and Rs3 million would be spent on the construction of a hostel at the Superior Science College, he maintained.

The MMA MNA stated that Rs80 million would be spent on the cementing and widening of roads along the Kabul River and Rs130.6 million had been earmarked for the construction of a underpass near Suray Pul. Besides, Rs11 million had been allocated to install streetlights in the city.

Mr Khan said 10 new tubewells would be installed at a cost of Rs7 million, while Rs3.2 million would be spent on the improvement of Sui gas supply.

The MMA government, he said, had accorded top priority to health sector and Rs5 million would be spent on the new building of the Government Mental Hospital and Rs90 million for a medical ward and purchase of angio-graphy machine at the Lady Reading Hospital.

Similarly, Rs10 million would be spent on the construction of a new hospital in the city.

The MNA said an endowment fund of Rs500 million would be established, and its mark-up would be spent on the treatment of the chronically ill patients at the three teaching hospitals of the city.

He said the city needed a huge development package from the federal government to make it a model city, because its roads, sewerage system, gas pipelines, electricity wires and parks needed immediate repair.

The MMA leader also demanded end to loadshedding and asked the government to provide relief to the people in the hot and sultry weather.

He also expressed concern over non-payment of net hydel profit by the Centre and said if that amount was released it would bring much-needed improvement in terms of development in the city.

To a question, he said the MMA would not budge an inch on the LFO issue.
