ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) on Friday directed Yusra Medical and Dental College, Islamabad and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Medical College Mirpur AJK to stop admissions for the year 2014-15 due to lack of facilities and other deficiencies.

According to an official of PMDC, Yusra Medical College has been stopped from admission as it failed to build its own hospital and at present its attached hospital was not up to the mark according to the PMDC criteria.

“Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Medical College, Mirpur AJK, does not have proper full time faculty. Colleges were stopped from further admission after the surprise inspections by the PMDC,” he said.

PMDC will not compromise on the standards of medical dental education. All the postgraduate institutions should get accreditation from PMDC as a postgraduate training institutes have to be accredited with PMDC, he added.

In December 2013, PMDC stopped Federal Medical and Dental College, Islamabad from further admissions due to lack of facilities and other deficiencies.

Council recommended closure of three medical and dental colleges i.e. Hashmat Medical and Dental College Gujrat, AL-Razi Medical College, Peshawar and Sahiwal Medical College Sahiwal as they did not meet the minimum standards of PMDC for recognition of medical and dental Institutions.

Registrar PMDC Dr Amjad Mahmood while talking to Dawn said that PMDC is very much clear that colleges would not be allowed to play with the future of new generation.

“If colleges want to continue they have to meet minimum standards of the PMDC. Colleges have been instructed to stop further admission due to which they will not be closed and they can upgrade their infrastructure,” he said.

“PMDC plays no role in the survey report, a 13 member team of eminent professors visit the colleges and then it files report about the standards of the colleges. PMDC ensure that professor

of a province should not be part of the survey team visiting a college in same province,” he said.

Replying to a question regarding Federal Medical and Dental College, Islamabad, Dr Amjad said that college had no facilities.

“College had 18 faculty members out of which few were on leave. College will be opened if it meets all the requirements,” he said. Ends.
