KARACHI: Three militants allegedly associated with the proscribed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and one Rangers man were killed when a shootout took place during a targeted operation conducted by the para-military force in Karachi's Gulshan-i-Buner area on Wednesday, DawnNews reported.

The report quoted a Rangers spokesman as saying that the suspected militants, belonging to Hakimullah Mehsud's unmbrella group were plotting attacks to be carried out during Muharram and opened fire when the Rangers team arrived in the vicinity to conduct a targeted operation.

He further said that the three suspects were killed in retaliatory fire by the raiding team.

The spokesman confirmed that one of the Rangers man, belonging to the Anti-Terrorist wing, was killed and another injured during the clash adding that a huge quantity of weapons, including hand grenades, were also recovered from the killed suspects.

The suspects were also said to be involved in the attack on an Imambargah in Karachi's Quaidabad area in September this year.

The bodies of the suspected militants were handed over to the police for completion of legal formalities.

Gulshan-i-Buner lies in Karachi's Landhi district near Quaidabad area.

In an unrelated gunfiring incident, one person was killed and another was injured in the city's Kalapul area.

Another person died of gunshot wounds near the Five Star Chowrangi in Karachi's North Nazimabad area.

One suspected dacoit was arrested by police after an encounter in the Korangi Industrial Area. The arrested man was injured during the shootout.

Another person died of gunshot wounds in Old Sabzi Mandi (vegetable market) area of the provincial capital city.

In another incident, an exchange of gunfire took place between police and accused persons in the Roshan Bagh area of Karachi's Al-Noor Society (near Federal B Area).

Police sealed the area while the suspects managed to escape under the cover of gunfire.
