Taliban attack on dam in Mohmand region kills three

PESHAWAR: A militant attack on a small dam in Mohmand tribal region's Halimzai area claimed the lives of three dam employees and injured seven others on Wednesday.

Security sources told Dawn.com that around a dozen militants attacked a small dam in Halimzai area of Mohmand tribal area causing damage to the installation.

The militants also set alite excavator and other machinery on the site.

As backup personnel began arriving at Gandau dam, the militants blew up their vehicle using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Three persons were killed and seven others injured as a result of the blast.

The Inter Service Public Relations also confirmed that around a dozen militants attacked the dam site at 0130 hours and also kidnapped about four civilians including two engineers working on the project.

Security forces reached the site of attack and began a search operation in the area, as a probe into the incident went underway.

In another unrelated incident militants attacked a police station in Janikhel area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Bannu district injuring three persons.

APP adds: Spokesman for Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Mohmand Agency Umar Khalid Khurasani in a statement from unknown location claimed to have killed three persons including two engineers and the contractor and abducted two other persons from Mohmand Tribal regions's headquarters Ghalanai.

These are not fighting for any religion but for blood lust. Killing innocent employees earning a living for their families cannot be termed , fighting for a cause. These are mercenaries hired by foreign agencies to spread fear and terror and to give bad publicity to Pakistan internationally.

Its a shame that militants attack civilians and helpless people and consider themselves brave and spreading Islam-- shame on them. There is only one of dealing with them, attack them at their strongholds, in their houses. There is no other way of dealing with such scumbags. I wonder why our soldiers get killed so easily, are they not well trained? We don't hear about foreign soldiers being killed. They have lost only few hundreds in more than 10 years war, whereas we have lost thousands. Their supporters, religious groups and politicians should be arrested, phones, emails taped so that more lives can be saved and bring these Anti-Islamic Ulemas to justice.

@Muhammad Khan: If they arrest their supporters, we will have many army and ISI officers (current and past) in Jail. The nation turned a blind eye to mujahideens, Taliban, LeT, Lashkar e Jangvi and HuM for decades....worse, any in Pakistan nurtured such people for decades. Now we deal with such mindless monstrosity. Hafeez Saeeds and Mumtaz Qadris are heros in Pakistan.

what sense does it make to attack a dam? how is this a target? All that will happen is the locals will suffer due to lack of water. These people are nothing more than bandits.

@Armagan Akram: May be one of our neighbours have a problem with our dams and they are funding these extremists. One has to understand in the wider picture - who in the region is benefiting the most from Pakistan's situation in last 15 years. Look at India's development in that period and you'll have your answer. Nearly 90% of direct foriegn investment has gone from here to there.
