KARACHI, Sept 16: Veteran Wajid Iqbal woke up from a deep slumber to win the 2nd Ranking Scrabble Tournament at the Beach Luxury Hotel here on Sunday.

The three-time national champion Wajid who hasn’t won a major tournament for quite some time finally came good by winning eight of his nine matches including one against the reigning champion Waseem Khatri.

Mohammad Inayatullah grabbed his now familiar second position with seven wins and a spread of 1,470.

The star of the day, 16-year-old Arham Abidi couldn’t realise his dream of winning his first major tournament in Pakistan.

After dominating the tournament till the end the youngster lost narrowly to Wajid in the final round after having beaten him earlier in the day. Arham finished third with seven wins and a spread of 1,149.

In the junior category, 14-year-old Arsalan Ahmad of St Jude’s School was the winner with six wins out of seven matches and a spread of 710.

Abbas Shabbir was the runner up with five wins and a spread of 664 while Arsalan’s younger sister, 12-year-old Aliza Ahmad grabbed the third position with four wins and a spread of 328.
