LAHORE, May 23: A civil court on Thursday issued notices to the Punjab government, Metro Bus Service Authority and Turkish company in a Rs11 million damages suit filed by a man who lost his both legs due to alleged negligence of a bus driver.

Ashiq Husain filed the suit through Advocate Muqtedir Akhtar Shabbir and stated that he was rendered disabled due to the negligence of the driver and government officials but was left at the mercy of society.

The counsel said the petitioner, a welder by profession, was about to enter a Metro Bus on Feb 11 but caught between its doors. He said despite the accident, the driver kept driving the bus nonchalantly.

He said the driver’s grave negligence resulted in a serious accident. The injured petitioner was taken to hospital where doctors had to amputate his legs to save his life.

The counsel said the petitioner who was the sole breadwinner of his family was now dependent on his wife and daughter.

He pointed out the government officials as well as the Metro Bus Service Authority had been approached time and again for compensation but no one paid heed to the petitioner’s plight.

The counsel prayed the respondents be ordered to pay Rs11 million to the petitioner as damages.

After hearing the initial arguments, Civil Judge Mazhar Husain Rai issued notices to the respondents for June 24.
