HYDERABAD: Rangers picked up four activists of the Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party (STP) in Qasimabad on Friday night and resorted to firing on a crowd that had gathered in the area.

STP spokesman Nand Lal Malhi said that the party activists were picked-up by Rangers in the Nasim Nagar area, when they were busy during the electioneering campaign of party candidate Dr Rajab Memon.

He said that they were beaten up and taken to an unknown location. STP activists who were present in the area for campaigning were fired upon by the Rangers.

Reports said that Rangers had picked-up two suspects, Muzaffar and Waqar Memon for possessing unlicensed weapons.

A Rangers official told a TV channel reporter after the incident, that they had signalled to the two men to stop during snap checking but tried to flee on their motorcycle and were chased in Qasimabad.  They were at last arrested at Alamdar chowk.

When a reporter and cameraman of a local TV channel reached Qasimabad to cover the incident, they were harassed and forced to leave the area. Law enforcers tried to snatch the camera of the cameraman at the site.

The cameraman, along with the reporter had to run in the streets, leaving behind their bike. The bike was later taken away by law enforcers.

Earlier, a raiding party of Rangers picked-up some suspects from Muttahida colony unit-10 Latifabad on Friday morning.

Weapons were recovered from their possession but they were licensed ones and after verification, the suspects were released.

On Thursday night, Rangers had snatched the camera of another private TV channel which was later returned after several hours.

Rangers picked-up one man near Gul Centre. He had been found to be in possession of an unlicensed pistol. He was later handed over to Cantonment police station.

The police produced him before a judicial magistrate, where he was sent under judicial remand for 14 days.

Meanwhile, the B-section police station has lodged a case against two unidentified persons under sections 302, 353, 34 PPC, following the killing of a personnel at a Rangers checkpoint near its officers mess on Thursday night.
