KARACHI, Feb 14: The Jam Sadiq Ali bridge is in a state of dilapidation and a major accident could occur anytime though Rs500 million needed for its repair is not being provided by the Sindh government, an official has said.

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation administrator Mohammad Hussain Syed said this while speaking to members of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry during a visit to the KATI office on Thursday.

He said that the bridge that connected the industrial area with the city centre was in a very poor condition and if its reconstruction and renovation was not carried out immediately, any big accident could occur.

The construction of the bridge required Rs500 million, but due to a shortage of funds, the KMC was unable to carry out repair works immediately, he said.

He said he had asked many times the Sindh government for funds but to no avail.

The KMC administrator warned town administrations dumping their garbage in the Malir River and said that it was a very hazardous act and if they did not stop this illegal practice, an FIR would be registered against them and disciplinary action would be initiated against them, besides the dumper trucks being used in this activity would be confiscated.

The Karachi administrator said that the KMC in connection with the property tax had not received any amount since July whereas for Octroi the KMC was being provided only Rs320 million instead of Rs1,000 million.

S.M. Muneer and Zubair Chaya of the KATI also spoke.
