It is downright confusing: why would anyone try and redo the immensely popular ghazal, Chupke Chupke Raat Din, sung by Ghulam Ali?

It was strange to see and hear Amir Ghulam Ali, son of Ghulam Ali, singing his father’s signature ghazal in modern-day style on a music channel (the recording does not come across as current by the way). He is a good singer, make no mistake; but the fact remains that the nuanced composition cannot be either recycled or redone only to sound contemporary. It is one of those classics from which you can only learn. What can be done, though, is that the same words can be composed differently and that too on an experimental basis. Let’s give Amir Ghulam Ali the benefit of the doubt, and say that he had his father’s consent for doing what he did.
