LAHORE, May 15: A gunman was killed while the Gawalmandi station house officer (SHO) and a passerby were injured in an exchange of gunfire between two suspects and the police near the Mominpura graveyard on Tuesday.

The suspect managed to drive a police vehicle during the shooting and disappeared after leaving it at another place.

SSP (operations) Sajjad Hasan Manj told Dawn SHO Abdul Sattar was patrolling the area with three gunmen and the driver when they hailed two motorcyclists. He said the suspects opened fire at the policemen who were standing along the road. The firing left the SHO and passerby Muhammad Umar injured. The police retaliated by firing and left one of the suspects fatally injured.

The other suspect ran towards taking cover of shooting, forced the driver out of the vehicle and sped away in it.

The SSP said the vehicle was later found abandoned at a certain place. The SHO and Umar were shifted to Mayo Hospital by Rescue 1122.

The SSP said the young suspect wearing a police cap was shot several times by the police. He died at the scene while his identity had yet to be ascertained.

He said the police impounded the motorcycle.

Manj said it had yet to be established if the deceased was a robber.

ACCIDENT: A girl was killed and 11 passengers of a bus were injured in two road accidents in the city on Tuesday.

Sanda police said 20-year-old Uzma was crossing Ring Road when a vehicle struck and injured her. The driver fled the scene while the girl succumbed to her wounds at a hospital.

Also, 11 employees of a mill suffered injuries when their bus plunged into Rohi Drain near Gajjumatta.

Rescue 1122 and Edhi ambulances shifted the injured to Lahore General Hospital.

Nishtar Colony police said the bus of a mills was taking at least 30 employees when the bus driver apparently lost control over the vehicle.
