KARACHI: Almost every educational institution located in Sindh was damaged during recent monsoons, said Minister for Education, Pir Mazhar ul Haq on Tuesday.

Talking to Head of Mission at Jordanian Embassy, Islamabad, Syed Yazan Al-Qaisi the Minister said buildings that housed hundreds of schools and colleges in the 12 worst affected districts were ravaged.

“The infrastructure has to be rebuilt as the calamity consequent to climatic changes was beyond comprehension,” said Pir Mazhar ul Haq.

He said funds were equally needed to rebuild many of the buildings besides initiating extensive repair work to turn functional those institutions where at-least structure was intact.

Later talking to journalists the Sindh Education Minister defended government decision to introduce Chinese language at school level.

“The decision was not only because China is a trusted friend but also in view of the growing relevance of Chinese language,” he said.

The minister said tremendous development made by China in the field of science and technology make it prudent that our children and youth learn the language that could open fresh vistas of education and employment opportunities for them.

Pir Mazhar said Urdu is also being taught at different educational institutions of China.

In reply to a question about posts of teachers lying vacant in different colleges, he said inductions have been made through Sindh Public Service Commission.

“We will see that the newly appointed teacher assume their responsibility without any failure,” he said.

The education minister said appointments of the teachers were made on merit basis.
