LONDON: British Foreign Secretary William Hague expressed his shock Wednesday over the abduction and killing of Pakistani journalist Saleem Shahzad and called for a transparent investigation.
A 40-year-old father of three, Shahzad, vanished after leaving home in Islamabad to appear on a television talk show, two days after writing an article about links between rogue elements of the navy and Al-Qaeda.
“He courageously reported on the terrorism and extremism which has caused so much suffering to the people of Pakistan,” Hague said.
“His death highlights the dangers faced by those working for a stable Pakistan and our thoughts are with his family at this time of grief.
“I welcome the announcement of an investigation. It is vital that this is thorough and transparent and that those responsible are brought to justice.”
Shahzad was tortured and said he was threatened by the country's intelligence services. Hundreds of mourners turned out Wednesday for his burial.
