KARACHI: Prison officials say seven inmates have been killed in clashes that took place following a search by authorities for cell phones at Hyderabad central jail.

The rioting took place on Tuesday at Hyderabad jail in southern Pakistan. Hyderabad prison official Aftab Soomro says fighting broke out during a search for phones illegally kept by inmates.

He says the inmates, some of whom were armed, resisted the search and police were called in.

Regional prison chief Ghulam Qadir Thebo says calm had been restored by Wednesday and authorities were investigating how the inmates were killed prisons are overcrowded and are known for their poor conditions.
