KARACHI Star-studded Wapda had to struggle to overpower KESC 8-4 with three goals from Rehan Butt in the national hockey championship at Hockey Club of Pakistan on Thursday.

Penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas remained unimpressive as he failed to convert any short corners of the six won by Wapda.

The winners, who led the first half 4-1, got off to a whirlwind start when they opened the scoring with a goal from Pakistan forward Rehan Butt in the sixth minute, while Waqas Sharif scored the second the following minute.

Asif Michael was on target for Wapda in the 22nd minute before KESC opened their account through Irfan Khan three minutes before halftime. Wapda stretched their lead a minute later when Rehan, a Pakistan forward who remained off-colour during recent World Cup in New Delhi, completed his double.

Gohar Rasool was on target on a penalty corner to make it 5-1 five minutes after half time. KESC recovered to give Wapda a fright by scoring two quickfire goals. Mohammad Umair first reduced the margin in the 43rd minute and then Irfan got his double three minutes later.

Wapda, playing without their coach Mirza Waheed Baig who had been suspended for misconduct, came back with three more goals to complete the tally. Farhan slotted home in the 56th minute, Gohar found the target for his double in the 60th minute, while Rehan scored his third two minutes before fulltime.

KESC replied with their fourth goal through Irfan who scored his third.

Meanwhile, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) beat Pakistan Navy with a convincing 6-2 win.

The sailors were cruising after Falak Zaman converted from a penalty corner two minutes into the match, but NBP fought back to score six goals to walk away with a 6-1 lead at half time.

NBPs onslaught began with a penalty corner goal from Muhammad Ateeq in the 10th minute before Tariq Aziz consolidated four minutes later. Akhtar Ali's 18th-minute strike was followed by two goals from Haseem Khan in the 22nd and 24th minutes, while Khurram Shahzad completed the tally in the 28th minute.

Navy got their second two minutes before the halftime on second short corner conversion by Falak. But Navy's efforts went in vain as they failed to produce more goals in the second half which remained barren.

Earlier, Pakistan Army handed a crushing 6-2 defeat to PAF.

Mohammad Afzal scored twice for Army, while other scorers were Muzamil Hussain , Waqas Zafar, Kashif Ali and Khalid Ahmad. Barkat Ali and Shahbaz were the scorers for PAF.
