A MAJOR source of corruption amongst members of parliament is the development money given to them by the government. This practice started in 1985 and was done mainly to buy their loyalties. Whether these funds are spent on projects meant for people’s welfare is another serious issue. According to a recent report by the Transparency International these funds mostly end up in MPs’ pockets. Hardly any development work takes place in their respective constituencies. Recently it was in the news that the Balochistan Provincial Assembly members were given millions for development but hardly any work was undertaken. The same is true in most parts of the other provinces.

The primary job of the members of parliament is legislation as is the case in other developed countries. It is the job of local municipal authorities like the CDA, LDA, KMC to carry out development activities.

Politics in Pakistan is considered a profitable business. Most of these MPs end up by earning much more than what they spend in their electioneering campaign.

It is encouraging to note that recently the Supreme Court has also taken a serious view of this issue. There is, therefore, a strong case for a suitable law before the next election to ban the grant of development funds.

If implemented, this step will put an end to the lust for making money while in power and will also ensure election of honest and dedicated people to the assemblies.
