ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan sought a comprehensive report on Thursday from the Sindh election commissioner regarding the door-to-door verification of voter lists in Karachi under the military's supervision.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed heard the case regarding the verification of voter lists in Karachi.

Hamid Khan, counsel for Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan, requested the court to issue implementation orders regarding its earlier verdict for door-to-door verification of voter lists in Karachi.

The Chief Justice remarked that the Election Commission should submit a written reply stating when the door-to-door campaign was launched and also to provide the number of army personnel deployed for this purpose.

The PTI chief’s counsel also said that no instructions were issued with regard to voting rights for overseas Pakistanis.

The chief justice then observed that while people’s complaints were increasing, no progress appeared to be taking place. He said that the election commission secretary would be questioned on progress once the Sindh election commissioner submitted a detailed report.

Later, the case was adjourned till February 13, on which date the Sindh election commissioner is also to submit an affidavit regarding the verification of voter lists in Karachi.

In December last year, the Supreme Court had asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to carry out fresh verification of voters’ lists in Karachi, with the assistance of the army and the Frontier Corps.
