LAHORE, Jan 15: The Jinnah Hospital management allegedly denied treatment on Tuesday to renal-failure patient Shahnaz Bibi and seized her documents for complaining to the health authorities about ‘wrong treatment’ which led to failure of her kidneys.

Patient’s son Qadeer Ahmad took her home without treatment and appealed to Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to take notice of the issue. Shahnaz Bibi was getting treatment at Jinnah’s Medical Unit-IV for the last five days or so.

A source said the senior medics and institute’s management also warned a doctor of Medical Unit-IV of initiating ‘departmental action’ against him for admitting Shahnaz despite knowing that the hospital had dialysis facility for a limited number of patients.

He said the ‘in question’ doctor had admitted kidney-failure woman on Friday last keeping in view her deteriorating health condition due to blockage of fistula.

“The doctors on the direction of the administration misbehaved with me and my mother, seized all documents relating to investigations carried out privately and at Jinnah Hospital and forced me to leave the institute,” Qadeer Ahmad of Fareed Town said.

He said even he was not allowed to use wheelchair and he shifted his mother on arms from second floor to the rickshaw on the road.

Qadeer said the hospital administration also refused to return him the test reports. “The tests reports from private labs and various prescriptions and treatment notes of doctors of other hospitals pertaining to the disease of my mother are not property of the Jinnah Hospital.”

He said no doctor would attend his mother without examining medical history.

“The senior doctors turned angry on Tuesday for raising issue to the health authorities about wrong treatment of my mother which led to failure of her kidneys,” Qadeer alleged.

Jinnah Hospital Medical Superintendent (MS) Fazalur Rehman denied misbehaviour with the patient saying that the hospital administration was not involved in seizing her file.

He said the matter was in the knowledge of Allama Iqbal Medical College Principal Prof Dr Mehmood Shaukat who had taken up the issue of Shahnaz Bibi at the level of professors.

“As the issue was taken up by professors, the Jinnah’s management had nothing to do with it,” Dr Fazal said.

When contacted, Prof Mahmood through a text message said: “I had called her (patient’s) son to my office but he did not come.” The AIMC principal said he had sought a report on the issue.
