PESHAWAR, Dec 19: Police on Wednesday launched a drive against motorcycles plying on city roads without number plates following information about a possible attempt by suspected persons to enter the provincial metropolis.

A police official said that they had impounded about 300 motorcycles on first day of the campaign against vehicles plying on Peshawar roads without number plates.

The official said that reports about possible sabotage attempt were frequently pouring in and they were compelled to take action against all vehicles without number plates or with tinted glasses.

“Section 144 has not been imposed, but we have been ordered to take action at all costs,” the source said. He said that reports concerning targets were about sensitive places, including houses of high officials and political figures, and that was why police had to restrict movement of traffic on certain roads.

About the impounded motorcycles, the official said that 150 had been cleared on production of relevant documents, while the rest were still in police custody. He said that some motorcycles had been purchased on installments through banks and the owners were yet to get original documents.

When contacted, Rural Circle SP Mohammad Javaid Khan told Dawn that the action was a compulsion as the number of vehicles, particularly motorcycles, had increased manifold which could easily be used for sabotage attempt.
